We recently connected with Madalyn Dobbs and have shared our conversation below.
Madalyn, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
I hope to be remembered for the way that I treated people, specifically, with kindness and sincerity. I think that the greatest impact we can have while on this earth is the way that we treat people. Nobody will remember fame or fortune but rather the way that others made them feel. With everything that I do I want to take the posture of humility and love and dealing with clients specifically within my business is a prime opportunity to practice that kindness.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I created a photography business in 2020 during the time that many of us were stuck at home. I wanted to take the opportunity to start my own business and do something that I love so I created Madalyn Dobbs Photography. I purchased an entry-level DSLR camera, created an online presence for my brand, and began reaching out to potential clients in the hopes that I could book my first photo session. At the beginning of my brand, my niche was mainly focused on family and portrait photos that I enjoyed taking. Since then I have gained a growing clientele, narrowed down my editing style, and broadened my photography subjects to include weddings, events, and even commercial/branding photography. I love the freedom that my business offers me to do what I love while helping others create lasting memories that they will fondly look back on. Another big bonus of what I do is the opportunity to meet new people and get to know my clients on a more intentional level. The photography industry is very saturated but I believe that each photographer brings their own story and purpose to the market. For my brand, I set myself apart from others in how I form connections with my clients instead of merely conducting a business transaction. I also strive to showcase the natural beauty that God has created by limiting the amount of editing that I do in order to deliver an authentic and freeing experience for each of my clients.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Word-of-mouth hands down. Nothing has as much influence on choosing a service provider than past clients sharing their positive experiences with their family and friends. Many of my most recent clients have been referred to me because of one session that I did. I love when my past clients have such a positive experience that they naturally tell others about it and it helps build credibility as well.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
When first starting out in a new business endeavor it can be easy to fall into the thinking that you must follow the crowd in order to be successful. It is simply not true. Yes, there are good business practices that most if not all should follow and there are tried and true methods. However, often the most attractive aspect of a business to potential clients is the ability of the business to connect with its followers and deliver a one-of-a-kind experience. Don’t be afraid to stand out from the crowd and be the first to try something new.
