We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mackenzie & Wes Bert. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mackenzie & Wes below.
Mackenzie & Wes , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
When our first child, Thatcher was around 5 months old we, like so many parents started to introduce purees. Like many first-time moms, I began obsessing over ingredients and was shocked to find out how much sugar and junk were in these products that claimed to be “healthy.” Weston worked for his 3rd generation-family farm which grew different nutritious greens which led us to look into growing spinach and kale as they both are powerhouse greens. We started giving Thatcher Green Rascal and soon our friends were asking for some greens for their own kids. Then came the fun part, creating a brand. Each night we discussed our ideas for the company, and one night sitting outside on our porch we came up with ‘Green Rascal.” Green was obvious but we called our son, Thatcher a rascal and since the idea sparked from him it only made sense. We knew that the products we were creating were of the highest quality and we wanted our branding to match that. We went through so many different mock-ups and vendors from jars to boxes to inserts it was a process, to say the least. We spent about 3.5 years working on Green Rascal before it finally launched June of 2021.
Mackenzie & Wes , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi there! We’re Weston and Mackenzie Bert, a third-generation farming family, focused on growing and producing the most premium green foods on the planet.
But like many of you reading this – our newest and hardest job (since 2017) has become that of Parent. We have four kids under the age of 5 and are pregnant with our 5th. Keeping up with them is more than a full-time job.
When we started to create Green Rascal we realized that we had something really valuable that no other greens company at the time had. We grow all the vegetables on our farm, we process everything in our boutique milling facility. We oversee every step of our product being produced. And just like our customers, we are parents too, we share in the same frustrations as they do when it comes to getting your kids to eat healthy foods.
We strive on being transparent and trustworthy and want our customers to rest assured, that we started Green Rascal for our kids and would only want the absolute best for them. We are so happy to share our products with other parents and it gives us such joy to see pictures of their adorable children drinking Green Rascal.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
While our audience is still small we rely heavily on social media to grow Green Rascal We were shocked (and maybe naive) to learn from social media managers that you could purchase followers. As appealing as this sounds, we wanted to ensure that we grew our audience organically which has certainly taken a little more time but we feel in the long run will be worth it. The one piece of advice I would give to someone looking at building an audience is to stay true to yourself and be patient.
Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
Customer service has always been and will continue to be our #1 priority. Without our customers, there would be no Green Rascal. With every order, I sit and write thank you notes- in between running after crazy toddlers of course :) It’s something so small but has really helped me connect with our customer base. I also reach out to them via social media a few weeks after receiving our product to ensure they are having success with it.
