Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mackenzie Sundahl . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Mackenzie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
What it takes to be successful is having the courage to start as a beginner. I like to believe that nothing is out of reach so with resilience , hard work and a vision, anything is possible. I move into everyday with my best foot forward hoping to inspire and make other women feel beautiful.
Mackenzie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Mackenzie Lucia, I am a San Diego native who has spent time working along side other influential artists. I have developed a specialty in luxury hair color that mimics a laid back lived in feel. I pride myself on my attention to detail providing my clients with a custom service and educating them on how to achieve salon hair at home. On my instagram @manecharacter__ I dive deeper into all things lifestyle and beauty. It’s important to me to inspire women and remind them that we are all the “mane character” of our own lives. I am most proud of the connections I have made through this industry and the people who sit in my chair everyday with such trust. I look forward to building my brand and womens confidence.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson I had to unlearn is the pursuit of perfection. In a world dominated by social media, its easy to compare success without seeing the challenges behind the scenes. I’ve been introduced to people and opportunities that haven’t aligned with my journey but focusing on those who believe in me has been what matters the most. It’s crucial to embrace imperfections, keep pushing forward and stay true to your dreams.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
After graduating cosmetology school I had the opportunity to assist under influential hairstylists in Southern California. After that I decided I was going to hit the ground running by starting as a booth renter in a salon. That isn’t typical for someone just starting out because instead of being fed clients through a salon, you are responsible for building your clientele. I have had days where nobody sat in my chair, days where I was working just to make enough money to pay salon rent that week. It’s in those moments where I wanted to give up but instead told myself to trust the process and believe that I had something special to offer that was different than most. In 2021 I opened my own studio and couldn’t be more grateful for those moments I faced because they shaped me into the stylist I am today.
