We recently connected with Mackenzie Garza and have shared our conversation below.
Mackenzie , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
i started doing nails during covid so nail salons at this time were not booming. In cosmetology school they had us make an instagram for our future business. Once i was already out of school trying to actually start now i did a promotion where i will do any design any length for just $15 and since this was during december everyone took advantage! My first ever client was a stranger that let me go to her house to do her nails because at that time i didn’t have a set up so i would travel! she put all her friend on me and that’s what really put my name out there.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi my name is mackenzie and i’m a 21 year old nail tech. I started doing nails at 19 years old as a travel nail tech, soon after i had a little set up in my room that i shared with my boyfriend. what was it that got me here?
as a little girl i always had interests in hair, makeup, and nails and i even told myself i wanted to be a cosmetologist. I grew up in the small town of Los Fresnos Texas where it was extremely enforced to go to college.
i graduated high school in 2020 the year covid started and at that time i didn’t see me going to college because of my at home situations, i looked into a local cosmetology school where they kept reaching out to me to enroll so i went with it! here i am almost 3 years later now offering acrylics, acrylic toes, and press on nails. i do want to continue to expand by offering 1 on 1 classes and help those like i wish i had. For those who done know i am a home based nail technician who works in an rv. what i believe sets me apart is i provide a chill, comfortable, and aesthetically pleasing environment for my clients. i truly take my time with my work, as well as value that 1 on 1 time i get to have with my clients. i am so grateful for my clients and those who support me from their phones it truly means a lot! i am proud of how far i have come, i didn’t grow up with money and business owners for parents, but what i did grow up with was the motivation to become better and if i can do it…so can you!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Social media is addicting, you know what you like to watch right? social media doesn’t have to be hard. As someone who was able to grow an audience here are some tips i have that could help you out…
first things first you need to be able to let loose. you can see when someone isn’t being themselves and that’s what us viewers want to see, we want to see your true selves.
what helped me was i always had a private story on snapchat and well i pretended tiktok was my new private story, at the end of the day you don’t know those people who who cares if they have anything negative to say.
my next tip i have for you is to be consistent, as a viewer i love when a video comes on my fyp and i go to there page and they have a lot of the same style video i eat that up every time! so as a content creator i take that into mind.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
if you are wanting to build clientele you cannot hold back! Once i started putting myself out people really started flowing in. i am one who does promotions consistently as well. one week i will do $10 off a freestyle or $10 off frenchies. This gives your clients the opportunity to try you out and get $$$ off as well. When that happens you now have to show up! what do i mean by that??? You need to give them the BEST experience they have ever had. I have had clients tell me my positivity shows. When you have someone in your chair you need to be able to turn off any personal negativity and just be able to make them as happy as possible !
