We recently connected with Mackenzie Day and have shared our conversation below.
Mackenzie , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The album I released in 2022, “Girl with No Curtains” was really the first project where I feel like I executive produced and produced on the record, truly stepping into my power and sense of sound and direction. This project just catapulted me to where I am now and also introduces and alludes to the next project Im releasing this summer, “Addict in My Attic” — at the time I didnt know it was going to just be the beginning of the story unfolding even more, but these projects choose themselves a lot of the time, as I was just the girl with no curtains who was told enough times I needed to get curtains until the idea just seemed so in front of my face. Especially since it was in the time of the pandemic, 2020-2021 was when I was writing that and then released it 2022. Now 2 years later, that girl is driving this next record as an executive producer, co producer on 3 songs, producer of 1 of them my self. That project felt like something that saved me from a time when I felt like I was losing myself a bit, when life felt so unknown to all of us in our own experiences and I got to reflect and document my experience.
It’s really meaningful to me because it’s deep within all the things that were going on, the way I change darkness into light and from pain into art. I write on subjects of being in your twenties, mental health, being an older sister to someone who deeply struggles with mental health and the perspective of family and uncomfortable situation, confrontation within your power and imagination.
Mackenzie , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Mackenzie Day is a poetic expression of female angst: the kind of artist who not only reflects the world around us, but compels us to awaken to its shadows. With vulnerable lyricism and emotionally captivating melodies, she captures the human experience with a raw outlook. Living in the boxless realm of alternative indie rock/pop and R&B, Day emerges as the “Girl with No Curtains.” who is soon to introduce the “Addict in My Attic” her upcoming EP this coming August.
An uncomfortably honest writer with no care to hide her feelings, as her musical journey is a deep dive into experiences. Fearlessly diving into the depths of the human psyche, bringing forth a compelling narrative that echoes the universal journey of self-discovery. The work serves as a mirror to societal norms, urging listeners to think beyond the ordinary and participate in the dissection of self and humanity. Mackenzie Day emerges not just as an artist but as a storyteller, an activist, and a guide through the intricate pathways of existence. She brings an authentic voice to the forefront of the music scene, inviting us to confront the uncomfortable truths and embrace the beauty of the human experience. With the drive and ambition and a constant need to write the next project and constantly be building, the kind of artist that doesn’t take no for an answer.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
My psychic, Jennifer Shaffer, actually recommended these books to me, they’re manifestation books, but overall help you hone into the highest version of yourself in this life…which for me is the main goal at the end of the day. Because through self we are able to do everything and everything, there is no competition, no better than, just you. I think that’s the biggest thing at the end of the day, knowing your self so deeply, that no one else matters, in the way of comparison. Your path is your authentic beautiful path. The books are “How to become super natural” by Dr. Joe Dispense and “Wishes Fufilled” by Dr. Wayne W Dyer – they talk about the brain, the energy in the air around us and how to find your frequency to the life you want and wish to live.
If you wish to hone into self and change your life, id recommend, I think its helpful for creative or entrepreneur, and so necessary if you feel called to a more spiritual approach to life.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The mission is ultimately just to live a life doing what I love, simple as that. Hustling and living a more unstable life as a starving artist but continuing to go and never giving up to get to where you desire. I love the perspective of how we’re given these desires in this life time, and the power of knowing what you want and what you feel called to do in this life. Theres so many definitions of what “success” is, especially in this capitalistic society in America we’re living. As an artist whom is still on my journey and building my way to this level of “societal success” the end goal is to be making a living on my art, and I know I will when time is destined, until then we keep going and we don’t give up, it’s the only way.
