We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mackayla Springle. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with MacKayla below.
MacKayla, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
I started a podcast in 2022 to talk about the domestic violence I endured over the course of five years. As a nursing student, a wife, a mother of two and expecting, I do not maintain regularly scheduled episodes, however, I have successfully created an open door for DV victims to reach out anytime (a safe space rather). When I started the podcast, it was meant to be therapeutic for me and the healing I still needed to do. It ended up reaching a much larger audience than I ever intended and I became what I felt was an advocate for all of these women reaching out. Over the course of the last two years, I have received countless messages telling me how thankful they are that I was brave enough to share my story because they found strength in that and they were finally able to leave their own toxic relationships. I’d say I am mostly healed with the exception of a little PTSD moments, but healed enough that I don’t need to talk about it anymore. That being said, I will forever keep sharing, advocating, and helping all of these women who need support, a friend, strength, resources, and anything else that they might need. I used to wonder why it happened to me, but looking back, I have become stronger, and because of what I endured I am able to help numerous other women create their best life as well.
MacKayla, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m 31 years old, recently married, we have two children (a son 5, and a daughter, 6), and we are expecting another boy in February 2025. I just got accepted into nursing school, I work at the hospital as a patient care technician, and I spend my free time fueling my creative outlets. I started my podcast, I Deserve It, in 2022 as a method of therapy to help myself heal from a 5-year abusive relationship. That turned into me advocating for other victims of domestic violence and helping to provide support, friendship, resources, strength, and whatever else they might need to escape their abusive relationships. I don’t regularly post episodes as I am a very busy person and I preach about mental health consistently, so I feel it is appropriate to make sure I am practicing self-care and not staying up during all hours of the night trying to produce a new episode when I have so much homework and other things to take care of. My listeners really appreciate this. I also create content on YouTube, it is much more candid and I share a lot of the things that go into my day to day life, the realities of nursing school, what life is really life after leaving an abuser, and finding trust in someone new. I hope to reach many others that would benefit from what I have to share.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I’d have to say that that the most rewarding aspect of creativity is the way it can impact others. I genuinely love producing new podcast episodes, youtube videos, and even some graphic design for certain occasions. As much as I enjoy it, I love to see the reactions of others when they encounter it and the way that it impacts them, whether that be a small or large impact.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
If you listen to my podcast, you will hear many stories about my life as a domestic violence victim. My resilience is what got me where I am today and how I am able to guide others to be more resilient. When I left my situation, I had two kids under 2, I was working 6-7 days a week at the hospital just trying to make ends meet, I had to find somewhere to live that he wouldn’t be able to find, file a protection order, and deal with all of that while still trying to be a mother and provide for my children. I had to drop out of school and I needed a lot of support from my family, mentally and financially. Nearly a year later, I packed up my children and we moved across the country to Hawaii from Indiana. That was the best choice I ever made. I am living dreams that I never knew could exist and I have realized that if you truly want something, the only person stopping you is you. I have always been so overly positive, even through some of the worst times, and no one could ever understand because I have always been so unlucky. That hope and positivity got me through it and to where I am today.
