Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mack Wright. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Mack, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
So with this Dinosauria project, I’ve released a few things before, mostly singles or live recordings but last year in 2023 I partnered with Somnimage Sound Art Recorings to release “A Myth, Nothing More” which was my first full-length recorded fully in my home studio and my first release not be entirely self-published. It’s a project that I poured a lot of myself into and I’m happy with how it has been received. Someone once described my music as “beautifully unsettling” and it’s a comment i wear as kind of a badge of honor. I’ve continued to work since releasing that album and have new things coming up later this year along with a song released in February as a single, “Past the Horizon”.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
So I’ve been deeply interested in music for most of my life. My family is full of musically-inclined people and they really fostered that love in me. I was drawn to the guitar specifically from being fascinated with blues music and seeing movie scenes like Ralph Maccio battle it out with Steve Vai in “Crossroads” or Marty McFly blasting through Johnny B. Goode in “Back to the Future”. I got my first guitar when I was 13 and I’ve been creating ever since. Everything from recording songs on a 4-track cassette recorder to producing electronic music on a pc; I just wanted to be making some form of expression. Dinosauria originally started years ago as a band created by myself and a close friend from school. We both had a love for experimental music and improvisation and those were the foundation we built things on. After filling out our line up, we played some shows and wrote some songs that i still think are great, but as is often the case, life eventually pulled us in different directions. In the mean time i focused my attention to other projects. I spent a lot of time working in hip-hop and was even a member of the hip-hop group Y.R. Generation for some time. But a time came where I decided I wanted to spin up something that was more guitar centric again, and Dinosauria was reborn. While there was some minor implementation of creating loops in the old days of the project, this time around I leaned heavily into it. I started mostly with playing live, improvising loops that could either turn into tight rhythms or cacophonous walls of sound. Dinosauria blends elements of shoegaze, post-rock, doom metal, and noise to create a unique ambient experience People in the local music scene have always been so supportive of my live shows and releases. There’s a great community here that really values experimental music of different kinds and I’ve been so uplifted by that community.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, it would definitely be the feeling that this thing or this moment i created evoked a response from someone or meant something to them. When I’m in the process of creating something, my main focus is generally making something that’s true to myself or something I know that I personally enjoy. If I can achieve that, i’m happy for it. So it means even more when i’m able to do that and still have it resonate with others.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I would say the biggest factor driving my creative journey is the desire to share the feeling of being seen and known that I’ve experienced in the music and art that I love. You never know what person you may reach because they’ve felt or experienced something that you touch on with your music. If i make a piece of music that helps to uplift me when i’m feeling down, i’m hoping to also uplift someone out there who listens. If I can help someone get through a dark time or work through a tough emotional moment then I feel like i’ve made the world better in some small way and it’s something I’m happy to do as an artist.
