We recently connected with Macie Melander and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Macie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
After my second son was born I was tired of boutiques and stores in general not having many boy options so I decided to teach myself to sew. I realized many boy moms felt the way I did so I decided to start my own small business and start creating clothing items that everybody could use!

Macie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a mama to 3 boys, after my second son was born I taught myself to sew because there weren’t many boy options at stores and boutiques. After a couple years of sewing for my boys I realized many other boy moms felt the same so I decided to start my own business. I am also a military spouse so starting my own business just made sense since we move so often, that’s where the “wandering” part of The Wandering Label comes from. My goal with my business is to make cute gender neutral items that everybody can wear and love, along with offering custom items to show off personalities. I try my hardest not to waste any scraps so some of my items are “mixed up” as I like to call them and one of a kind. I source my fabrics from other small businesses to get the best quality and support others in the community.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Attending pop up events and markets has been a great way for me to get out into the community and meet new clients. It makes things very personal and is a lot of fun getting to know everyone.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Being a military spouse there have been a ton of times I’ve had to pivot in life, owning my own business was never in my plans but I am thankful it worked out that way! Now I have something that will allow for all the “pivots” that are to come whether it be moving across the country, sick kiddos, deployments. Owning my own business allows for flexibility and all that life has to throw at me.
