Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Macee Jones. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Macee, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Talk to us about building your team? What was it like? What were some of the key challenges and what was your process like?
No! The business was only my business partner Alys and I. Social media helped us a lot. It’s always scary starting something that is so unknown. The first time we posted we had a few people DM us and we were so excited. As time went on we had more interest and then we started the interviewing process. Since day 1, we talked about the type of environment we want for our salon. Positive, uplifting, family, comfortable place. It was cool to see the girls we interviewed and how they were going to benefit our salon. We have THE best staff. If I were to do it over again, I would not stress about hiring. It always ends up working out!
Macee, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Macee Jones. I specialize in all things color and extensions. My clients are some of my best friends. Building relationships with my clients and making them feel beautiful is my favorite thing about my job. I started working at a salon as a receptionist after high school and loved the salon environment. The salon I was working at offered an apprenticeship program. I ended up doing the apprenticeship and it was the best thing I could’ve done. I was able to grow a clientele while I was in school. After I graduated I was commission for a couple of months and decided to go booth rent after that. I hired an assistant and I will say that was one of the biggest building blocks for my career. I only work 3 days a week but take double the clients per day with an assistant. Owning a business has always been a dream of mine. My business partner Alys was one of my coworkers at the time. We had the idea of starting a salon and the idea never left. We started looking for buildings, creating vision boards, with endless phone calls. One thing we were certain about is our environment for our salon. We are building a family. A place where people feel confident in their work, and our clients feeling confident in themselves. We are obsessed with our staff and we’re excited to keep growing. I have been surrounded by the best people and have been able to build my dream clientele. If I have learned one thing, have confidence because the sky is the limit. You should love your job and I am grateful I do.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I’m not an expert with social media nor do I have a lot of followers. The thing I have realized with social media is how important it is to show your face. Your clients and audience want to see your personality and know who they’re going to be booking the appointment with.
How’d you meet your business partner?
My business partner and I ended up going on a group date. We were both in school at the time and we had a good time. The next week she was at the salon I was working at interviewing. I forgot her name and thought it was Alyssa, it’s Alys. I told our owners her name is Alyssa and that was extremely embarrassing. They called her by Alyssa and then told her that I said that was her name. She got hired and we became work besties. We worked together for 2 years and then started our own business!
