We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mac Senour. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mac below.
Mac, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I have always love cooking and baking, Sometimes I’m so focused, I forgot to talk to my guests. I was famous in my apartment building for making WAY to much food and sharing it with neighbors. At one point I posted a menu and signup board outside my door so neighbors could tell me which days they’d be home and which meals they’d like to try,
I was waiting for someone to come into my life who shared this passion but so far that has not happened. So for years I just worked on menu ideas. At first I wanted to do a pizza truck, and I’m sure my neighbors got tired of daily pizza attempts. I took a trip to New Orleans and fell in love with the food there. I was there a week and I gained 8 pounds. I switch to making a Cajun menu and I thought I had something unique. As happens, I stumbled into a friend who knew someone with a Cajun truck that failed. I heard the stories and decided that maybe Cajun wasn’t a good idea, back to pizza.
I found a food truck construction company and we spent months on a design for a wood fired pizza truck that I could work by myself. We just couldn’t make it work, so I shelved the idea,
Some time later I was watching a movie and a character in the movie was having a fit that at the child’s birthday party there was cake, but not ice cream. That stuck in my head. Then I was watching some cooking show, as you do when you cook often, and the host was talking about different kinds of donuts, specifically the difference between yeast and cake donuts. I made a joke, to the TV, “Let them eat cake… cake donuts”. Finally I put the two things together, cake donuts and ice cream.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My mother didn’t cook or bake. I used to joke that I can order the “special” in 7 languages due to how often we went out to dinner. One night we went to a very fancy place in Berkeley California and I had my first taste of Chocolate Moouse. I thought I had died and gone to heaven. I was 13 and obsessed at making it at home. It took about 10 tries and finally I came close…
My first jobs were in restaurants, busboy, dishwasher etc, and I got the idea that working for someone as a chef was not a fun career. I decided to get into computers instead, specifically programming games. I loved it for 30+ years. I was working for a company in San Francisco, single, and I realized that all my friends had gotten married, with kids, and were really busy people while I found myself at home with a lot of free time. I decided I didn’t want that. I wanted to get out of the house and have a life. I looked at a future of watching TV by myself night after night, and decided I wanted a more active life.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
“Do you know how many donuts you’ll need to sell to make back that investment?”
“People are getting away from sugar these days”
“Get a hobby, not this”
If you don’t hear these, or versions of these comments, then I suspect that you’ve not pushing your idea as far as you should. Just smile, nod your head, and follow your passion.
I also heard:
“You’re selling donuts AND ice cream? You’re gonna be rich”
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I was a Producer in the game industry for 3+ years, won Game of the Year more than once, and decided I’d done what I set out to do… now I want a food truck that sells desserts. THATS a pivot.
