We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mac Cummings a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Mac , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.

When I transitioned from Secular music to Christian/Gospel, it was a big risk when it came to making a desirable income. I saw many DJs go back spinning Secular,, or play a variety because of the pay in one genre. From 1993 until 2007, I did that until I was called by a higher power to do all Gospel. There was no one I could look to as an example, so I took it amongst myself. Thinking about how can I make a living in a genre that was told not to charge because it’s the Lords music.. So where do I go from that thought. From 2007 until 2009,, I played a variety so I could stabilize my income. 2009 was the year I took a risk and began spinning Gospel only. At the beginning of the journey, I felt like it was the worse decision I could have ever made, but with my faith in the higher power who created the thought in my heart gave me the Faith to believe in the process. On this day, I have become one of the top Gospel DJ in the world.

Mac , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

My name is DJ Mac Cummings “The Turntable Minister”and I am a Professional Gospel DJ who reside in the city of Atlanta, Ga. The idea on becoming a DJ in this genre came as a thought’ many years ago. I came into the music business back in 1993 as a DJ spinning a variety in different genres. The majority of my contacts told me that spinning the Gospel will not be a wise business decision in 2009 when I began spinning Gospel music. Being one of the first to do anything is a challenge because it’s not the normal. When I looked at the outcome, it didn’t make sense in the early stages. I’m so proud of myself on this day because I trusted in the source that gave me the mindset to endure. Present, I am the owner to DJ Mac Cummings LLC. When I see the reviews by clients we have done events for, it makes us so Proud as a Business.. The next time you have an event, utilize our services. How did you build your audience on social media?

Social media was the last thought when it comes to promoting me as a Gospel DJ. My first site to sign up on was Facebook in 2011. Coming from the old school way of doing everything was very challenging. There was limited access on looking up a DJ who spins the Gospel on Social Media. Many knew that I was a DJ, Barbershop owner, and a Ticket/Gate agent at the Airport in the city I was living in at that time (Memphis Tn). Many began to send Friend request as I gained the maximum amount of Friends very quickly (5000). I would post pictures, and the comments would be very high in numbers, but the music posting was low.. in 2013, the site came out with Live Video. I begin spinning the Gospel with probably 2 viewers every time I went on. One night in 2014, I was online mixing the Gospel, I saw over 50 viewers, and 3 shares. My confidence began to grow and the viewers did as well. During the Holiday season in the same year, my numbers went up to over 100 Shares. I believe that it open doors for other DJ to spin the Gospel on Social Media. I will not say that I’m the first, but prior to that happening, I didn’t see no DJ mixing the Gospel online. Other countries encountered the genre, but not in the USA. There are many DJs who spin the Gospel today. Social media has given my Brand a chance to Grow, Glow, and reach the unreachable. If you have a desire within to create that idea that’s within, utilize Social Media. Its gives you a chance to be heard by millions.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?

Becoming the first Gospel DJ to win an Award in 2017. Hearing my name called at the Spin Awards as DJ of the year meant everything to me. Also, creating Gospel Mixtapes that many in my circle thought was a bad idea has become the best decision ever for me. I have created over 150 variety of mixes in the Gospel genre for the listeners to enjoy.
