We were lucky to catch up with Mabi Morka recently and have shared our conversation below.
Mabi, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
When I first started my business, I was 18 years old and living on my college campus. I initially had the idea to do nails because of my love for creativity and art. I also felt like it would be a great skill to know how to do on myself. So I just went from there. Within a few months, I bought my first supplies with the support of family and started to take clients who also attended my college. A few years later I mastered my skills and became a licensed nail tech. From there, I taught other nails techs online and in person how to grow their own nail business. I also scaled my business by selling products. This was a pivotal point in me for my business because I had to search for vendors and invest into my supply. But I loved the process and enjoy being able to provide to my customers. My content and marketing online helped me reach customers from all over the world. I have used platforms like Instagram and Tiktok to increase my online presence.
Mabi, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got into my business because of my love for beauty and art. I always enjoyed being creative when I was younger through many forms of art. Doing nails is one way I express creativity. Something I learned being in my industry is how important marketing is so I started to teach other business owners through my content to also help them out on their journey. I think the main thing that sets me apart is my content online because I am able to teach, inspire, and bring others in on my journey. Some of the products I sell include press ons and nail kits. These kits help beginner nail techs start on their own journey. I also offer classes online to help beginner nail techs learn the process visually. My nail kits are one the products I am most proud of because I’ve been able to send kits internationally to places like Belgium, Switzerland, and other countries in Europe. This allowed me to be aware of how significant my impact could be through social media.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson that I had to unlearn is what success looks like as a business owner. We tend to believe that once you start a business, success will come at you fast but that isn’t always the case. Success is not linear and sometimes you have to go backwards a little to propel forwards. It may feel discouraging, but it is necessary to know that success does not look the same for everyone. I learned this through the slow seasons I have experienced. It truly teaches you to be resilient and to keep your vision no matter what.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
The main way I have built an audience on social media is my consistent posting strategies. Social media is a very powerful tool that allows us to connect with people across the world. Since the start of my business, I have used Instagram and Tiktok to increase my reach. I studied what was trending on social media and recreated it with my own twist. I have even created my own series of content that taught other business owners valuable skills that they can implement. A lot of my posts have gone viral which increased my audience overtime. To others who want to build an audience, you should create your own personal brand on social media and push out a variety of content including education, lifestyle, and motivation. This really helped my social media grow.
