We caught up with the brilliant and insightful M-Squared a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi M-Squared, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I was named after Michael Jackson and was so inspired by his Motown 25 performance doing the moonwalk for the first time. I saw how MJ captivated, impacted and moved people with his amazing gifts and that inspired me to pursue music. I started out in my middle school band playing drums and started DJ’ing while in high school and college. It was during college at Florida Atlantic University that I knew I wanted to pursue my artistry as a DJ and Producer professionally. I saw a documentary on Sean “P. Diddy” Combs and saw that his first break into the music business was doing an internship at Uptown Records. So that pushed me to begin interning for Universal Music Group while studying in college and fell in love with every part of the music business. While in school I would DJ a lot of the Fraternity and Sorority events as well as the various nightclubs and celebrity events in Miami and South Florida area. I also started making beats and producing music for artists while on campus.
M-Squared, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I enjoy creating great experiences through my art of music. I call it Designing the Mood. I am a Mood Designer. I believe in creating a world around my music. Music always gives me a special feeling and I always want to share that feeling with the world. I became the #1 DJ in America for Red Bull, I was featured on the hit TV series Master of Mix on VH1 and BET, I have toured with Grammy winning superstar Kelly Rowland and have collaborated with many more artists. In addition, I have made music history with my Drummer Natural Phil in our DJ/Drummer duo called The Mood Designers as the first DJ & Drummer band to perform live with a 100 piece Symphonic Orchestra. I have the honor of working with some of the biggest corporate brands in the world such as Tommy Hilfiger, Hublot, Uniqlo, Meta, NBC Universal and the NBA to name a few. Recently I was selected to become part of the Remy Martin DJ Collective. Through DJ’ing and Producing I have been fortunate to be able to travel all around the globe and see first hand the power of music and that it’s a universal language no matter what country or city I’m in.
What do you find most rewarding about being creative?
For me, one of the most rewarding aspects of being an artist or creative is that you get to create what inspires you and then connect with others that resonate with you and inspire others though your art.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Yes, the mission that drives my creative journey is creative freedom and connecting with other people that share and support that mission.
In addition, my New Single called “City” featuring artists Viper and A Beck produced by Me releases worldwide this Friday 10/28 on all digital music platforms.
