We recently connected with M. Spano and have shared our conversation below.
Hi M. , thanks for joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
When I was seven years old, my grandfather surprised me one morning with a First Act guitar and a scheduled guitar lesson within the week at the local music shop. After that, the rest came naturally. I’ve learned multiple instruments and spent some time off and on with various instructors throughout my high school and college years, but outside of guitar work, most of my learning came from practicing on my own and learning as I go. As for guitar, I still take lessons to this day. There is ALWAYS something to learn and there is ALWAYS someone better. Recently, I have gotten into music and video production, learned mostly through online courses. It’s really amazing what you can learn through the internet alone. I think these production skills are some of the most essential skills a musician should know in this day and age.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a multi- instrumentalist and a singer/songwriter. I take opportunities for session work (live and studio) when I can, and have recently spent some time writing guitar parts for sync licensing. Additionally, I am just starting to write and release my own music as a solo artist. Guitar is my primary instrument, but I’m no stranger to a piano or a drum kit as well. As of the last few years I have also began to sing, mainly to accompany my work as a solo artist. I feel it’s important to be well versed and to make yourself as valuable as possible in this highly competitive industry.
For my original work, you can expect a sound rooted in influences like Lifehouse and The Goo Goo Dolls, with a contemporary edge inspired by artists like The Band Camino and Nightly. Open guitars, driving drums, sweet melodies and the occasional guitar solo will certainly be present in my music.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, it’s the emotional connection to the art. There is nothing that can make you feel the way music can make you feel. By the same token, there is no way to express yourself the way creating music allows you to.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Most of the time the best support in this industry doesn’t cost a penny. Listen to a song, like a post, watch a video. Even if it’s only once and you don’t even like it. Giving the art a chance is the most we can ask for! And if you do like it, TELL US and SHARE IT! Just a compliment alone can go a really long way.
