Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lyssii. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Lyssii thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
My knee-jerk reaction to this question is always: “Yes! I should’ve started this 20 years ago!” but when I really take a step back, I see it differently. I believe everything in life happens exactly when it’s supposed to – and I think I arrived right on time.
From as young as I can remember, music has always been a part of me. My late grandfather was the first to spark that love. I was the kid blasting Britney Spears in my bedroom, performing in front of my mirror for an imaginary crowd. While I was quiet and shy on the outside, music gave me a voice I didn’t know how to use in everyday life.
At 8, my parents signed me up for voice lessons just for fun, but one harsh moment with a vocal coach scared me off, and I stopped singing in front of others altogether. I kept music close, but hidden – writing songs in a notebook, teaching myself guitar at 15, singing only when no one was around. Even when I had my first impromptu “performance” during my college bar’s live band karaoke night (aka Band-aoke), I still didn’t fully believe this could be something. So I tucked that part of me away again and focused on building a career in fashion, but something was always missing.
After going through a big life shift, including the end of a relationship, I finally had a meeting with myself and said: “It’s ME time now.” That decision changed everything.
In June 2024, I reconnected with Robbie Rosen — singer, songwriter, producer, and American Idol finalist from my hometown. I was introduced to him a year and a half prior, but never acted upon linking up together musically. What started as a voice lesson quickly turned into a full-on music journey. In just four months, I went from dreaming of playing a small local gig to performing three-hour acoustic sets, recording covers and original music, and releasing my first cover of Journey’s “Any Way You Want It” with producer SRNDE, which has now hit over a million streams.
I am so grateful for everyone who supported me through this journey.
More projects, collaborations, and releases are on the way — and I’m just getting started.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a singer-songwriter and performer blending acoustic soul with pop/rock influence. Whether I’m covering a classic in my own style or writing original songs, my goal is to make people feel something – to create connection, comfort, and a sense of nostalgia.
I currently offer live acoustic performances (collaborative sets with my friend and co-guitarist, Mikey), studio recordings (covers and originals), and I’ve been expanding into collaborations with EDM producers globally. I’m also working on building my own catalog of original songs.
What sets me apart is that I’m not trying to be anyone else. I know what it’s like to silence your passion, to dim your light and to wait, and I know what it feels like to finally choose yourself.
I’m most proud of the fact that I didn’t give up on this dream even when it went quiet for a while. I want people to know that it’s never too late to start, and your timing is always perfect when it comes from a place of truth.
This is just the beginning, and I’m so excited for what’s ahead.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
For a long time, I believed putting others first was the right thing to do. If I kept my own needs quiet, things would somehow just fall into place. In that process, music — the one thing that lit a fire inside me — slowly fell to the wayside. I told myself I’d get back to it when there was “time,” but time doesn’t wait for you. Eventually, I realized that shrinking myself wasn’t helping anyone, especially me. Unlearning that pattern wasn’t easy. It meant rewriting the story I told myself about what I deserved. These days, I choose my passion, and I make time for music. In doing that, I’m learning to choose me – not as an afterthought, but as a priority.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, it’s looking back and seeing how far i’ve come. From tucked away in the confines of my bedroom – fearful of singing in front of anyone – to performing live in front of crowds and releasing songs for the whole world to hear. I’m living out a dream i’ve had since I was a child, and that’s enough of a reward for me.
