We recently connected with Lyss Tan and have shared our conversation below.
Lyss, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you share an important lesson you learned in a prior job that’s helped you in your career afterwards?
Well, at my prior graphic design job, I learned quite a few valuable lessons. One of the most important things I learned was that it’s okay to ask for help when I can’t finish a task on my own. I used to think that asking for assistance was a sign of weakness, but I quickly realized that it actually leads to better outcomes and fosters a collaborative work environment.
Another key lesson I learned was that the role I was in was more flexible than I initially thought. However, I also realized the importance of communicating my needs and expectations clearly. By expressing my requirements, I found that I could shape my role to better suit my strengths and contribute more effectively to the team.
During my time there, I also had the opportunity to develop new skill sets, particularly in InDesign. I honed my abilities and became more proficient in using the software, which enhanced my overall design capabilities. Additionally, working in a graphic design job sharpened my thinking when it came to my own passion projects. I had to manage my energy and time more efficiently, which taught me the value of prioritization and working smarter.
Overall, my graphic design job provided a great balance in my life. It allowed me to feel useful by fulfilling important tasks while embracing the creative aspect of my work. It’s not to say that my fine art projects have no value, but the design job provided a different kind of fulfillment and a sense of practicality.
Lyss, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
As an artist and creative, my journey has been quite an adventure. I originally came to the United States from Malaysia to have a study abroad experience. I began my academic path with a communications major at a community college, but my passion for art led me to transfer to the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. It was truly a blast attending art school there, as I learned the majority, if not all, of my art-making skills. I had the opportunity to meet incredible mentors and friends who played a significant role in shaping my artistic vision.
During my time at the Academy of Art, I discovered my love for telling stories through art. I particularly enjoy creating whimsical illustrations and using color to convey mood and emotion. After graduating, I initially tried my hand at freelancing and even attempted to delve into the world of comics. However, I found the instability of freelance work to be challenging to cope with.
Luckily, I was fortunate enough to secure a teaching job at Sweet Arts Art Studio. It was a somewhat stressful period for me as my visa was ending, and I had numerous puzzle pieces to figure out. However, the support I received from my coworkers, employer, and the kids at the studio helped me stay afloat during that time.
Seeking new opportunities and wanting to make the most of my time in the States, I made the decision to move to New York. I immersed myself in the vibrant art scene, engaging with professionals in the industry and exploring various graduate school programs. Along the way, I received valuable assistance and guidance from others who generously shared their knowledge and experiences.
Ultimately, I enrolled in a Branding and Integrated Communications program at City College, recognizing that it would be a fantastic complement to my fine art skills. I’m currently learning a great deal from my peers and professors, and the program has opened up new avenues for my creative pursuits. Concurrently, I’ve also been interning as a graphic designer and video editor for the CCNY Foundation, which has provided me with hands-on experience in the field.
While juggling all of these commitments, I continue to work on my passion projects in illustration on the side. Additionally, I’ve been actively building my presence as a content creator on Instagram, expanding my reach and connecting with fellow artists and art enthusiasts. There’s still so much I want to accomplish, and I strive to remain flexible and adaptable to new opportunities and challenges that come my way.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One important lesson I have had to unlearn recently is the idea that I can constantly generate more energy and push myself harder to balance everything in my life. It took some time for me to come to terms with the fact that knowing my limits and setting boundaries is crucial for maintaining a healthy balance.
I used to believe that I could handle it all and as I started to experience burnout, it was a wake-up call that made me realize that I have to let go a little. It was challenging to accept that I can’t be everything for everyone and that prioritizing my own goals and dreams sometimes means sacrificing in other areas, it meant making trade-offs, and sometimes socializing took a backseat.
However, I’ve learned the importance of communication, both with others and with myself, in acknowledging my limitations and finding a healthier balance in life.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The driving goal or mission behind my creative journey has evolved over time. Initially, I had grand aspirations of wanting to change the world, embarking on a heroic journey. However, as I grew older, I came to realize that the most significant change I can make is within myself, and that alone is quite meaningful.
Creating art from an authentic place, fueled by love, joy, and care for others, has become my focus. I believe that by expressing myself genuinely through art, I can have an impact on those who engage with my work. I strive to create pieces that resonate with people and evoke emotions, fostering connections and understanding.
A crucial part of my mission is the continuous pursuit of knowledge and wisdom. I am committed to constantly learning and seeking out different perspectives. This involves reading, absorbing others’ experiences, and actively engaging with the world around me. I believe that by challenging myself and broadening my horizons, I can deepen my understanding and enrich my creative process.
However, I also believe that actions speak louder than words. Alongside seeking knowledge, I am determined to be a doer. I aim to consistently produce and share my creations with the world. I don’t limit myself to a specific medium; rather, I want to explore various forms of artistic expression to convey what inspires me—the beauty of nature and the experiences of life.
In summary, my goal and mission in my creative journey have shifted towards personal growth, authenticity, and making meaningful connections. By creating art from a place of love and care, continuously learning, and actively sharing my work, I aspire to make a positive impact on both myself and those who encounter my creations.
