We recently connected with Lyrical and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Lyrical thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
My mom had a very structured parenting style, we were well taken care of, very balanced with love, discipline, fun, spirituality, etc we were a bit sheltered but it was out of security and safety. She taught me to work hard, not to take material things for more than they’re worth and with that I appreciate life the way I should. I work hard for what I want, but I ron’t allow money to control me, I also don’t allow failures or opportunities for improvement to stop me either.
Lyrical, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I make music for real people who speak up for themselves, I speak up for others who can’t, I represent confidence, power of womanhood, motherhood, community, and so much more. I create true hip hop art, lyricism, emotion, happy, sad, angry, sexy, whatever I feel, I am truly who I am, my authentic self at all times.
I started free styling as a kid, writing poetry, I have always lived music and writing. I signed with Mr Lawton Records in 2012, we released my first album under BCD/SONY that year, and since had released music independently. I’ve placed on the charts, I’ve earned plaques, i’ve toured, I enjoy seeing the impact of my music on others. I am proud that people can reach out and let me know how my music gets them through hard times or how my music inspires them or gives them confidence.
My goal with my art and expression is to always be free to be who I am while motivating others to be who they are, encourage those to stand up for what’s right, instill confidence and love, and enhance my community with a message. If I do that through music no matter one song or hundreds, no matter one fans or millions, I’ve reached my goal and am fulfilling my purpose.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Stop pressuring artists by comparing them to others. Allow creatives to create as their expression allows them to because there is no right or wrong best or worst because it is self expression. Societal pressures take away from that creativity and reduce the art to simply a product lacking value.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is seeing your art transform others and live on. Seeing my music impact those in the world, teach lessons that people will use and teach others, know that it will always be here to go back and listen to reminds me that I am leaving my mark on the world, leaving my fingerprint and it is most rewarding.
