We were lucky to catch up with Lynn Woods recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lynn, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project(s) that I work on are the products from The Safe Purple Collection. With this collection, 25% of sales are donated to the non-profit organization that Back to the South Bling partners with, The No Woman No Girl Initiative. This organization’s mission is to provide hope, essentials and education to women and girls in the Triangle area, regardless of the circumstances of life.
As a domestic violence survivor, it was important to me to give back to the community and help woman and girls because I was helped and without that help, I don’t know what I would have done. We can all work together to help one another get through anything.
Lynn, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Started by me, Lynn Woods and located in Raleigh, North Carolina, Back to the South Bling is a gift shop that specializes in fun bling gifts for women who love to stand out from the crowd, that makes a statement, are loved by the recipient, and that fits her personality because every girl deserves to sparkle!
I grew up watching women not be their true selves. Rather than loving who they were and letting their light shine, they were dimming it to let others shine, They would minimize their accomplishments, they would minimize how intelligent they were, they would “hide” their true selves. Back to the South Bling is my way of creating products for someone to stand out, love, who they are, and relish in their greatness!
The shop carries bling cups, mugs, and t-shirts, as well as jewelry, makeup bags and pouches. One of the best compliments I receive is when women tell me that my products make them feel special. That is my ultimate goal. Every woman is special.
Back to the South Bling also hosts workshops/classes and private bling parties. The workshops/classes are held throughout the Triangle Area and are an excellent introduction to bling, but more importantly, they are a way to meet new women and make new friends while crafting! Private bling parties are a way to do something fun and different with friends, family, co-workers; at a private bling party, you and your guests will enjoy each other while blinging an item, laughing, eating, and enjoying your favorite beverage!
Whether you’re looking for a gift for yourself or for someone else, you can find a gift that has meaning and that the recipient will love!
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I believed that creating more would mean more sales and that is absolutely not the way things work. Being an entrepreneur, you want so badly for the world to love your products and services that you sell and you may think that if something isn’t selling it’s because it’s not liked or that what you created isn’t good enough. Creating more isn’t the answer and thinking that your product or service is not good or that no one wants it isn’t the answer either.
Brand recognition is important, especially for a new business. If no one knows you exist, they can’t buy your product so instead of making more, market more and network more.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
What drives my creative journey is that I want all women to know how special, unique, and wonderful they are and to relish in knowing who they are.
