Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lynn Vogeler. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Lynn thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
I create the content for my blog in my 1,300 sq., ft home in Port Barrington, IL. I along with my husband of 30 years have raised three beautiful children in this small house.
The name Living Large in A Small House for my blog started in 2012 but it really came to life in 2020.
Lynn, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I share my love of decorating, cooking, entertaining, organizing, and gardening with the world.
When life as we know it changed in 2020, my corporate job was eliminated. Being close to retirement age, I knew I needed to have a plan for the next phase of my life to be successful in my retirement. A pandemic gave me the opportunity to pursue my dream of sharing my love for all things home.
Living in a small house is the backbone of what I do. Everything I write about is focused on making life in a small home functional, beautiful, and large.
Small house living works when you are organized, use your space creatively, and purchase multi-purpose furniture for your home.
While I have cooked for 100 people, I typically only cook for two now, and my recipes reflect that.
On our small plot of land, we have huge gardens; vegetable, perennial (both sun and shade), herb garden, and a cutting garden. We also have chickens who give us fresh eggs daily. My hands in the dirt are therapy to me.
Our gardens produce vegetables that we preserve for year-round goodness. The flowers add beauty not only to our yard but also as cut arrangements in our home.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I have so many passions and interests and while they all are centered around my home, they are broad. I could never niche down to something that was capturing an engaged and loyal following.
It wasn’t until I recently pivoted slightly by making “small house living” the key focus of all of my writing that I started to make some real progress. In just a short time, I’ve seen some amazing results.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I joined a mastermind group and was mentored by KariAnne Wood from Thistlewood Farm. Most people think that blogging is just sitting down at your computer and writing. There is a huge technology learning curve involved and I learned that and more in this amazing group.
I also found my people in this group. There are six of us who formed a community or tribe and we meet virtually once a week to discuss problems, share information, and are each other’s emotional support. In between our meetings, we text and talk. We have become true friends. While we are scattered across the country, we have been lucky enough to meet each other on a few occasions.
