We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lynn Johnson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lynn below.
Lynn, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I always knew I wanted to pursue a creative path. What I wasn’t sure of was how that path would reveal itself and ultimately come to fruition.
Drawing, painting, photography and then graphic design in college were the beginning of my artistic pursuits. I’ve always loved to draw, using all sorts of materials to find interesting ways of making marks. After college, when I was working as a graphic artist, was around the time I picked up the paintbrush again and began the transition from water based media to oil paint.
In the early 2000’s my husband accepted a job offer in Atlanta, so we moved from Montana. I began working at an admired art gallery in the city. Friendships developed with artists and collectors who welcomed me into the artistic community and encouraged me to continue painting. That was the moment, the spark. I’ve been painting ever since.
Lynn, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Lynn Johnson is an American contemporary artist. Born in Minnesota, Lynn grew up with a love for nature and the outdoors. She graduated from Iowa State University with a bachelors degree in fine art and advertising design.
Lynn’s resume includes retail management in merchandising/planning and design, graphic design for printed media and art gallery management. After twelve years as a professional artist, Lynn’s work has been exhibited in galleries across the US and her paintings reside in corporate and private collections in the US and Europe.
My paintings are a dialogue of sorts between the abstract and representational. I work using a variety of materials: oil paints and pigments, graphite, charcoal, spray paint, and collage. My subject matter is floral at it’s core, sometimes recognizably so, other times not. I paint intuitively and spontaneously, focusing on gestural movement and mark making.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal as an artist is first and foremost to form a lasting connection between my work and those viewing or collecting and to ultimately enhance their living or working environment. Gallerists and collectors alike have told me that my work is received as calming and serene, and strikes an appealing balance between feminine and masculine.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Sharing. I have had the pleasure of working with children and adults to encourage and/or further their creative aspirations through special projects, collaborations and workshops.
