Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lynn Buckmaster. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Lynn, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Nature has always been my sanctuary. I suppose that would have been the case anywhere I lived but I was born and raised in NW Indiana. So peaceful landscapes especially those of the Indiana Dunes has inspired much of my work. All through my formative years, art was always “my thing”, and I am still fortunate to have consistent support and encouragement from my family and friends.
Yet, in college , my artistic aspirations were challenged by a renowned professor who dismissed not only my work but those of other female artists as well. Despite a 4.0 GPA, I recognized the futility of pursuing my art education in such an environment.
I told myself I would just continue on a journey of self-discovery and self-teaching but amidst the responsibilities of work, marriage, and motherhood, my artistic endeavors took a backseat.
After my daughter was grown, I had the realization that decades had passed, I was disappointed that I had let one person push me from my path and I renewed my resolve. Prioritizing my artistic passion again, I began painting and studying every spare moment.
I decided to give myself a goal to work towards to help keep me focused. I aimed high and went for the biggest dream I dared, the Indiana Dunes National Park Artists in Residence Program. “That ought to keep me busy for awhile” I thought. That program is a prestigious, extremely competitive one for professional level artists. While I renewed my resolve, the reality was, I was a self-taught artist without any major accolades, my chances were slim. My first application in 2019 was rejected. It was not unexpected, but it did fuel my determination.
In 2020, I applied again. The letter arrived in the mail, I opened it with hope but braced myself for the same response.
“Congratulations ” it began, I was so elated to be accepted, but, COVID-19 intervened and suddenly the program was canceled, and for who knew how long.
In the spring of 2021, I stepped into the dunes as an artist in residence, a surreal moment of triumph and gratitude. I got to live at the park for 2 weeks, my job, exploring and painting and sharing my work with the patrons. It was a wonderful experience. Each moment was cherished. Each brushstroke celebrated the journey that brought me to that point, culminating in the honor of having one of my paintings included the park’s permanent collection.
The Indiana Dunes will forever hold a special place in my heart, not only as a muse but as a testament to resilience and perseverance. My artistic journey has left me with a profound sense of purpose, driving me to inspire and nurture others to chase their passions relentlessly.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Lynn Buckmaster, and I have always had a deep love for the outdoors and creating art. As a self-taught artist, I find inspiration in nature, particularly in painting landscapes. I am passionate about encouraging others to pursue their creative passions. Based out of my studio in the historic Fairchild House in Demotte, Indiana, I continuously strive to improve my artistic skills. My works can be found in private collections across the United States and even as far as Japan. I specialize in painting landscapes, infusing them with a sense of wonder and depth that invites viewers to explore, appreciate the natural world and hopefully spark a sense of adventure. In addition to my fine art works and commissions, I offer painting parties for businesses, individuals, and private lessons where I aim to share the joy of art and inspire others in all their own creative endeavors.
With my fine art paintings, I seek to create unique original pieces that not only inspire people to explore and enjoy the image itself but also the world around them, providing a respite from life’s stresses.
At my painting parties and private lessons, I have the opportunity to witness individuals’ confidence bloom as they realize their creative potential. Many have reported back to me that this newfound confidence extends beyond painting, impacting other aspects of their lives. Knowing that my work can be a source of inspiration and personal growth brings me immense joy and fuels my passion for pursuing my artistic purpose.
Seeing the transformative impact it has on others serves as a powerful reminder of the significance of my artistic journey. Witnessing people inspired by my work inspires me in return, driving me to continue fostering creativity and self-expression in others.
My artistic purpose continues to evolve, guided by the belief that art has the power to uplift, inspire, and make a difference in the lives of those it touches.”
Thus the meaning behind my tagine, “Inspiring Inspiration”.
In conclusion, my journey as an artist has been fueled by a deep love for nature and a passion for sharing the joy of creativity with others. Through my paintings and art offerings, I aim to inspire exploration, foster confidence, and make a positive impact on the lives of those I touch. If you’re seeking to add a touch of beauty to your surroundings, discover the transformative power of art, or simply embark on your own creative journey, I invite you to connect with me. Whether it’s through commissioning a custom piece, attending one of my painting parties, or exploring private lessons, let’s embark on a journey of creativity together.

Let’s create something beautiful together.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me , as stated previously, the most rewarding aspect has been seeing results from my determination and deliberate focus, accomplishing goals that I thought were well outside of my reach. But I feel most rewarded by discovering how my passion for painting is really just the vehicle that is used to inspire others and bring joy and confidence to others.
I have room to keep raising the bar, and as an artist I know that hopefully the journey is never-ending.
My advice, reach a little higher than you think you should and then be relentless!
I have found joy in painting but at times struggled with why it was important in the scheme of things.
I am learning that the importance of my passion is not in the paint.
My purpose is in what happens inside myself and others when I continue to share my joy of painting.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Non-creatives often perceive creativity as a natural gift, something bestowed upon artists effortlessly. While they may appreciate creative work, and if they meet the artist they may get to experience the joy of artist who created the art but they may not fully grasp the depth of effort, study, practice, and courage required to bring a piece of art into existence. From the outside, it might seem as though artists simply create from inspiration effortlessly. However, behind every brushstroke lies hours of dedication, experimentation, and vulnerability. Creativity is not just a talent; it’s a journey of exploration, growth, and self-discovery. It requires resilience to overcome setbacks, tenacity to push through creative blocks, and bravery to share one’s innermost thoughts and emotions with the world. Understanding this perspective can foster a greater appreciation for the creative process and all the artists who embark on it.
