We were lucky to catch up with Lynn April recently and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, Lynn thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to start by getting your thoughts on what you are seeing as some the biggest trends emerging in your industry

AI, while amazing in some applications, is so damaging to so many industries. It’s totally obliterating so many creative spaces on the internet and being used as a weapon against target populations. Social platforms are working to help combat this issue, but AI is growing faster than the regulations can keep up with.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

I started as a home baker with a side business making cakes and cupcakes for hire. I was working full time in an immunology lab while I did this side job, and when it became too much to handle, I closed that business and started sharing my recipes on a website instead (2014). In late 2014, I started to monetize my website, and in 2019, I was able to quit my lab job to turn my website into my full time job.

I now help people all over the world bake confidently from scratch! From simple things like cookies and brownies to more complicated things like layer cakes and pies, I’m always approaching recipes like a beginner so my readers have the best chance of success.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?

Using cups to measure! I switched exclusively to gram measuring in 2020 and I’ve never looked back. This is a much more reliable and accurate way to bake, and it helps with consistency among all of my readers, regardless of how they were taught to scoop flour from a bag with a measuring cup.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?

I love Instagram, and I’ve built a community there that is engaged, hilarious, and many just like me. We like coffee, Friends, to call out the trolls, and wear no makeup. I’ve been showing up as my authentic self since 2021 when my account really started to gain traction, and I love my little community over there!
