We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lyndzy Gordon. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lyndzy below.
Hi Lyndzy, thanks for joining us today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
Because the profit from my creative endeavors varies so much, I can’t rely on it to pay all of the bills all of the time just yet. Because of this, I do work part-time in addition to running my fashion line. I also feel like I need to break up my creative work with other things so I don’t get burnt out and aren’t staring at a computer screen all day.
There have been many times when I felt defeated and considered giving up and pursuing a more reliable 9-5 job, but I know in my heart I would not be happy or as fulfilled. I used to work a full-time office job while working on my fashion line on the side and I never slept. It wasn’t healthy. I really can’t imagine stopping my creative work altogether so I’d just end up back in the same boat as before. I know all of my hard work will pay off one day and I’ll be successful enough to not only be able to purpose my art full-time but also hire help so I can have time to do all of the other creative things I enjoy.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am bursting at the seams with imagination and creativity, which reflects in everything I do from my personal endeavors to my career. I love expressing myself through fashion, art, and cosplay.
I’ll start with Cause-Play Memphis, a charity organization I formed with fellow local cosplayers (costumers). Working together with local hospitals and other non-profits, our volunteers visit children who are sick, with disabilities, or facing adversities. Our goal is to bring smiles and enjoyment by creating a magical world of make-believe when we arrive dressed as their favorite characters from movies, cartoons, and comic books!
Another important part of my story is Bunni Designs, my fashion line! As you already know I am a huge dork hehe. Not only do I enjoy dressing up as my favorite cartoon characters but I also have a fashion line inspired by them. I started designing clothing inspired by my favorite fandoms and pop culture back in 2015. These styles weren’t the easiest to find at the time, especially for plus-size folks like myself so I teamed up with another creator and together we brought to life my clothing designs, and Bunni Designs was born.
I want to offer *size-inclusive* apparel that is not only cute but comfortable. I was sick of being unable to find cute, geeky, clothes that I enjoyed wearing in my size so I made my own. I create the artwork digitally and hire a 3rd party production house to print my designs onto fabric and sew them into wearable garments. While I can sew myself, I don’t feel confident enough in my skills to make things in-house so that does come with its own challenges and limitations. I’ve worked with several production teams throughout the years to help adjust the fit and make larger sizes, it’s exhausting, expensive, but rewarding in the end.
I want the world to know that Bunni Designs is run by a chubby, geeky, indie artist who just wants to share her passions with others. I work incredibly hard, every single day, to bring my little brand to life and I appreciate everyone who has supported me along the way!
In addition to my charity and fashion line, I work part-time at a doggy daycare and also do other creative odd jobs like freelance graphic art, painting murals, and web design.
Similar to cosplay, another creative hobby I enjoy is mermaiding! Not only do I design mermaid-inspired fashion but I love swimming in mermaid tails in any body of water I can get it!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Seeing people wearing my art!! It brings me incredible joy and whenever I get stressed and feel like giving up I’ll go look at photos my customers have tagged me in. Whenever I vend at conventions and see people running around in my apparel it makes my heart sing!
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Please be patient with us. We are individuals and not huge corporations like Amazon so we are limited by turnaround times, production costs, and manpower. When you support a small artist you make it possible for us to create more and in turn, make the world a more colorful and fun place.
Even if you can’t afford to buy something from us you can still show your support by interacting with our posts on social media and sharing our stuff online/in person.
