We recently connected with Lyndsey Sayles and have shared our conversation below.
Lyndsey, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Taking a beautiful image takes much more skill than just having a nice camera. Learning the proper lighting, posing, and angles are just a few pieces of the puzzle. I was probably 4 years old when I first held a camera. My dad is a photographer, so I was often the subject of a photo he was taking or coming along with him while he was working on a project. From time to time he would hand me the camera, tell me to look through the little square and push the big button. I was so happy with myself when we would get the film back (because this was pre-digital world) and I would see the image that I took. From then on I was hooked. I’ve had my own cameras ever since.
I’ve spent many hours learning the settings on my camera and how to manipulate the settings to achieve the type of image I’m looking for. I also invest into education on posing, post production of images, and client communication.
Looking back, I would tell myself to go all in much sooner. I held back from jumping into photography for fear of it not working out or not doing the normal thing of having a “normal job”. However, I’m so glad that my days are not normal and that I get to meet amazing clients because of my camera.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
So I’m the face behind Lyndsey Sayles Photography. We focus on creating an experience that will last long after your event. This is achieved by encouraging our clients to have physical products of their event (canvas, albums, or framed art). What is the point of hiring a photographer if all the images will just live in digital world? We want you to see your images on a regular basis and relive that moment over again.
I’ve been in the industry for 10+ years and have helped many couples plan their weddings and engagmement sessions. Listening to what my couples is a key to my success. This is also a time to help educate them with industry trends or standards that they might not be aware of as most are new to wedding planning.
My dad is a photographer, so I was naturally interested in what he was doing. I quickly found out that I too enjoyed taking pictures and helping friends and family cherish memories.
I’m most proud of the relationships that I’ve made with my clients through the years. Most of the time I become their go-to photographer for all of the special events. So that means I’ve watched a couple get married, have children, celebrate anniversaries, and sometimes one of the images I’ve taken is the last image a family will have of their loved one. It’s an honor and privilege to deliver images they can look at and love forever.
I believe everyone deserves beautiful images to look at through the years.

How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
Most of the time it’s through Facebook or Instagram. Watching them post about life updates or just the everyday pieces they share. I’m also good friends with a lot of my clients. So it’s very easy to stay in touch and know what’s happening.
Fostering brand loyalty is something I’m always working on. People have so many choices when it comes to photography. I try to be open and upfront with what photography options are available to them. Also rewarding clients who refer their friends and family to me helps to create brand loyalty.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I would’ve known how important it was to build a tribe of trusted industry friends as quick as possible These are ones that know the struggle of the industry, can help create inspiration, or just be a sound voice of reason when you feel like you’re all alone in this journey. Keeping yourself grounded with like minded people is just so important.
