We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lyndsey Boyd a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lyndsey, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Alright, so one thing we think people don’t talk about nearly enough is investments – either time or money. What’s one of the best or worst investments you’ve made and what did you learned from the experience?
As a wedding photographer, we are constantly plagued with having to make decisions on investmenting into the business. It’s been a learning lesson on what has been good places to invest and what has NOT been good places to invest. My number one investment that I will always put time, resources, and energy into is investing in education. That has always been a foolproof way to grow as a photographer. As your skills become more refined to the visions in your heart for being a wedding photographer, all else will follow. I would say education and equipment upgrades are my top two best investments ever.
The worst investment I have ever made have been Bridal Expos and random subscriptions that I forget to cancel . I tried the bridal expo thing this year and after investing over $2,000,I left with zero bookings and a negative investment. I followed all of the instructions on how to book clients from bridal expos, had email marketing set up and nothing stuck. I will say that my price range is high and I have heard that a lot of brides go to those things looking for a good deal. Unfortunately, running a newer business takes a lot of work and doing things for free/discounted cuts into what little profit we do take home. And it undercuts all of the countless hours we put into our work. I would say that they are definitely not worth that investment as a new business owner!
Lyndsey, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi hello!
I’m Lyndsey Michelle with Sol Luna Photography and I’m so thankful to be with you here to today as you read through this article. Sol Luna began its journey many, many years before I ever picked up a camera. Starting from an early age, I was always engaging myself in art, whether that was making my own outfits from pieces of fabric or throwing paint on large, neon construction paper. I have always been creatively minded and one of my greatest strengths has been being able to visualize something and then make it happen! Photography is where my visual strengths truly became strong. I love to lean into the environment and photograph the feeling of what’s going on around me or at least how I interpret it through photographs. I work with mostly couples and wedding clients to provide them with timeless, dreamy photographs to cherish for generations to come. Each story is unique and I love to truly get to know my clients so that I can tell their love story through photographs. I have a very unique approach to photography that sets me apart from most because I not only tell my clients love story, I also turn their love story into art. I don’t believe that a photograph is an artifact stuck in time but rather a living, breathing expression of humanity itself; of the purest moments that our hearts share with one another. When we look back on a photograph, we feel and see what we felt and saw in that moment.
I’m most proud of having the gift of photography. I believe God aligns us with our purpose when we align ourselves to Him and His way of life. It makes me proud knowing that I’m giving timeless treasures to not only to my clients but also to my clients children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Building an audience on social media has its ups and downs and even a few curves. My biggest tip for helping build a social media following is posting often and consistently. Having a schedule that you follow religiously where you post on the same day at the same time truly does make a difference. It’s really difficult to stay on top of this without scheduling content ahead of time. I highly recommend getting a grid lay out that you love (you can do this is Canva or on apps like Preview) and then batch scheduling as much as possible every week. I switched to a Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday post days and I’m already seeing an increase in data.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I think in business we have to constantly be ready to pivot and prepared to go in a new directions. I have found myself picking up things and immediately dropping them knowing that they won’t work. Such as, bridal expos. I attempted to do a few bridal expos this season and it did not go as well as planned. So now I need to pivot my business in a different direction for advertising!
