We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lyndsay Bui. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lyndsay below.
Lyndsay, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
I’m fortunate to say my parents have done so many things “right.” The relationship I have with my parents has directly impacted the person I am and developed my confidence to work towards my dreams and step into my calling. Although my parents divorced when I was a toddler, they always held each other in high regard, communicated well, and made my best interest their priority; For that I am grateful. I am also grateful to have had the love and support of my step-dad from the moment he came into my life.
My mom specifically has always been my biggest (and loudest) cheerleader. I have always known how much she loves me unconditionally, and how incredibly proud she is of me. She demonstrated the value of hard work, and allowed me space and autonomy to overcome my own obstacles (with support of course), learning from the mistakes I made along the way.
As a teenager, I envied my friends who had parents that would help them write papers and complete projects. The ones whose parents packed their lunches everyday, and made sure they had their homework ready to turn in. My mom didn’t do these things, and always gently reminded me that her job was to raise me into an independent, self-sufficient adult. It’s not that she didn’t support me, but she knew doing everything for me wasn’t a good long-term solution. She knew I needed to learn to manage my own responsibilities and by doing so I would gain the confidence to flourish. I smile now, knowing what a gift that was even though at the time I didn’t see it that way.
The biggest thing that my parents have done right is that they have made sure I know I am loved unconditionally. I never feared coming to them after making mistakes because I knew they had my back and that we would work through it together, I didn’t question my worth, because I was loved so deeply and unconditionally. Any dream and any goal was met with support and encouragement. It is still that way.
I believe the love and support I have from my parents has not only helped me to pursue my goals, but also influenced my ability and tendency to support, encourage, and love others. As a Life Coach and Yoga Instructor my hope is to partner with clients to provide the individualized support they need to move towards the life they desire; ultimately a life filled with peace and purpose.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Lyndsay Bui LLC, Life Coach + Yoga Instructor
My Story
For as long as I can remember, I have gravitated to the role of “helper.” Growing up this seemed innate as the first born, type A, enneagram reformer that I am. Over the years I’ve held roles such as captain, peer educator, therapist, coach, social worker, and teacher to name a few. My title may change in each season, but my passion and purpose are consistent: to love people well and share tools and encouragement to enrich the lives around me.
As a Life Coach and Yoga Instructor I have the privilege of connecting with women, building on their strengths, and cheering them on to a life they love- filled with peace and purpose. What I believe to be true is that our overall wellness and quality of life encompasses an intricate connection between our mind, body, and spirit. I also believe that small steps create big results.
What sets me apart is my blended knowledge of mental health coupled with yoga techniques to support both mental and physical health. Yoga in itself is compromised of physical postures, breathing, relaxation, and meditation. These components each support physical fitness, self-regulation, and awareness. As a Coach I pull from my social work and mental health training toolbox to develop goals and implement change, while providing yoga techniques that aid in stress management and support a healthy lifestyle.
Education and Training:
BA Communication Studies, Psychology minor
Master of Social Work, Clinical concentration with Marriage and Family Therapy Certificate
Registered Yoga Teacher, RYT200
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
I believe with all my heart I am exactly where I am supposed to be. Years ago when I was in graduate school and preparing to be a psychotherapist I first heard of the term “Life Coach.” I was so judgmental and dismissive. Who would want a Life Coach with possibly little training over a Mental Health professional? It makes me laugh now, as I fully embrace the Life Coach title. I have the necessary training and would never practice outside of my scope, and I have the opportunity to make my own schedule and prioritize my family and my own wellness goals.
Of course as a “helper,” I have daydreamed of so many possibilities I didn’t choose that I feel I would enjoy. I would’ve been a great nurse or lactation consultant. I would love to further my expertise in nutrition. Being a life-long learner is so valuable and I can only hope to continue to grow and learn, just as I am encouraging my clients to do!
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Being authentic. I am truly not focused on selling (of course I want to be compensated for my time and expertise), but I am wholeheartedly invested in the lives I can impact. I believe my purpose is to love others well and provide support and encouragement to others on their journey. Full disclosure- I am extremely fortunate to be in a situation where I am growing my business and have financial support from my husband. I have peace knowing that if I am authentic, continue to use my skillset and expertise to help others, my business will grow and I will continue to have the opportunity to do what I love, and the most meaningful work I could imagine!
