We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lynden Prosser a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lynden, appreciate you joining us today. Do you think folks should manage their own social media or hire a professional? What do you do?
I manage all of my own socials medias, and I think that allows me to work freely on my accounts. Despite being a small business, I think no matter what I will always manage at least one or two of my accounts just so that I have a handle on the company itself, because it has been great so far. Only advice I have is that put a lot of thought into your business before you start it because I recently went through an entire name and logo change and that was the only thing I would do differently.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a 15 year old sports videographer/photographer and also have a YouTube where I interview athletes and make videos. I started doing YouTube a few years ago, kind of just out of the blue with one of my buddies and we would make NFL videos on zoom calls, didn’t even edit them, and would just post them on YouTube because of how much we loved talking about sports. Now, I host the show and run the business by myself, and don’t do really any NFL content. One thing I am most proud of is just the high profile people I have had on my show and gotten to know through the podcast. Whether that’s the nations top ranked lacrosse, football, or basketball recruit, I really like getting to know these athletes and hearing their stories on how they got to where they are now. I have also recently started doing videography and photography for my high school football team (Sussex Central High School) and a few collegiate games in the area. The main thing I want people to know about me and my business is that I put a lot of time into the videos, and I think once sports fans get to see what I do, they will enjoy the content that I post.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
For the first year and a half that I had my YouTube, I went by the name M&L Tonight, but as I have gotten older and been making more popular content, I felt like I needed to change it to something more professional and catchy. Recently, I rebranded my whole business into Light It Up Sports, and got new logos. During the transition it was a little stressful, but now that it’s complete it definitely paid off and I’m excited to keep working hard as time goes on.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
I mainly reach out to new clients on Instagram or through networking with guys I’ve already worked with. When it comes to my interviews and podcasts, I normally message those guests on Instagram or Twitter and see if they would want to come on. Sometimes I’ll see a highlight posted of a high school player who recently committed to a college, look into their background in their sport, and just message them. For my photography and videography, I have a lot of local high school players reaching out to me on all my socials, especially during football season, to pay me to come out for their games and shoot content.
