We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lynda Wilson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lynda , thanks for joining us today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
A defining moment in my career would be the pivot/shift that I was able to make during COVID. This was a time of uncertainty, hardship and hopelessness for many people but for me it was the launching pad that I needed in order to establish becoming an entrepreneur. I was working as a therapist at a local hospital and while there, I saw so many people suffering and even some passing away with COVID. During this time, I decided to leave my comfort zone and build my own private practice in counseling. I did it afraid and I did not give up when times became hard. I did not have all of the pieces or plan completely together but my faith allowed me to know that I would not fail and I have not failed but exceeded my expectations. That was six years ago and I have not looked back since.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
In growing through the struggles of life, As a therapist, I had to learn that you cannot expect you from everyone else. Meaning, when we set our expectations on what we feel we would do and we hold others to that same standard, that sets us up for disappointment. I have learned that the most important things in life come with boundaries we have to set boundaries not just with others but with our expectations of them as well. We have to release the control over the decisions and actions of others in order for use to thrive. The backstory to this premise was a time that I became over extended, I was oversharing and was expecting that same thing from others and had to deal with the heartbreak that it may not be reciprocated and that is ok. We live and we learn.

Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
I would definitely choose this same profession over and over! I receive complete enjoyment in watching people heal and helping them to be instrumental in understanding that they can participate in their own healing as well. We may go through seasons of brokenness but we do not have to stay there our journey is ours alone. I enjoy seeing individuals that I work with take the initiative to become better versions of themselves one session at a time.
