Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lynda Smith. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lynda, appreciate you joining us today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
I decided to become a makeup artist when I became sick. I won’t disclose the medical condition, but the medicine made all of my locs fall out. I felt ugly and undesirable. I started watching YouTube videos on makeup tutorials. I just wanted to feel beautiful again. Once I picked up a brush, I never put it down! Now I am a thriving make-up artist in the houston area working on opening a new salon!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a mobile make-up artist in the houston area. I specialize in all things beauty! I retwist and maintenance locs! I can beat your face to the gods! I am black owned and I love what I do. In this profession it can be tough because the market is flooded! But one thing that I want people to know about Baddie Bar is we help you feel beautiful inside and out! The experience we create goes beyond what we do on the surface.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy I have is networking and Tiktok. I post my make up videos there as well as on my Facebook. Word of mouth is the best publicity so I make sure I put love into every appointment!

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn everything I knew about customer service! Being in the beauty industry is much more than creating a beautiful look. As a makeup-up artist you wear many hats. You have to make someone’s vision come alive while being a therapist, friend, stylist, and build a relation with each client. Customer service goes beyond the appointment. It’s being flexible with your schedule, understanding your clients needs and wants, and creating a wonderful environment. A safe space for women from all walks of life!
