We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lynda Price a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lynda, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
In establishing my practice, I had a desire to become an entrepreneur and I wanted the freedom and control over my own schedule especially being a fulltime parent. With that being said, the main steps I had to take was to establish the foundational aspects of my practice such as completing the proper legal documentation to become an LLC as well as getting my tax id. Prior to this I earned my ability to establish my practice by becoming a fully licensed professional counselor in the states of which I practice. The advice that I would give to young professionals is to make sure that they build their practice by establishing the correct policy and procedures as well as making sure that their legal documentation has been completed correctly.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I entered this field with a desire and a passion to see people change and succeed. I did not go into this field with selfish or wrong intentions or reasons. I started off working for years in the substance abuse field and became certified as a Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor. I help clients to establish goals in collaboration with them in order to move them from where they currently are to where they would like to be. What sets me apart is my empathetic spirit and willingness to meet people where they are in order for them to become who they desire. As a therapist, I can not do more for clients than they are willing to do for themselves. I teach coping skills and techniques as well as autonomy. I am most proud when clients actually change and live the life they they desire to live. I am licensed in Alabama, Georgia and telehealth in Florida. I feel that my style of therapy is eclectic and it depends upon the needs of the client. I emphasize growth and healing in the therapy that I provide.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
I feel that a willingness to learn with the client and empathy is definitely needed in succeeding in my field. I also feel it that we also have to be the change that we would like to see. I try to model self care especially if I emphasize self care to my clients. I also feel that establishing boundaries professional and personal are key to success as well.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing clientele has been word of mouth and joining directories that houses therapist information. Therapy for Black Girls has been instrumental in connecting individuals needing therapy with the appropriate provider.
