Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lynda DeFuria. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Lynda, thanks for joining us today. Can you share an important lesson you learned in a prior job that’s helped you in your career afterwards?
Some of the most important lessons I’ve learned within my time working in the industry are the ones that I’ve had to re-learn, sometimes multiple times.
A big one I was reminded of recently was the belief and acceptance that even when the work you’re doing, the art you’re sharing, the music projects you’re funding on your own (and not fully paying yourself back for yet), the auditions you’re showing up to and not getting callbacks for — it is visible. It is more than visible — it is seen and received and felt and interpreted and remembered and possibly discussed in rooms and conversations that you’re not aware of. When you least expect it, an opportunity will arise, usually because of this work, and you will be ready. So basically, even though it can feel relentless and like you’re lost in the shuffle, keep doing what you believe you’re supposed to be doing, create what calls to you, and stay consistent.
Lynda, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m an artist that wears many hats, but primarily a singer/songwriter, actor, and teaching artist. I think across all mediums, the connecting thread is storytelling and wanting to connect through shared or similar experiences.
I’m currently releasing reimagined remixes of songs from my 2022 EP, “Keeping Time” because I believe these songs that are about personal growth and breaking cycles, healing, heartbreak, and transformation are super relatable — at least that’s the feedback I’ve gotten from people. My goal with the remixes is to give these songs another spin, another way to be enjoyed. Creatively, it was really fun to musically zoom in on a new interpretation; explore the range of tones that already existed when I wrote them.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert. There are so many gems in this book. I read it in less than a day. I cannot recommend this book enough to all people because it’s about nurturing a creative life experience whether that’s your career, hobby, or an untapped well within you. Truly perspective shifting.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I myself am constantly rethinking the use of social media in my life and career. It’s constantly changing with new trends and formats, and I honestly have seasons where I struggle with the balance of creating content that represents me and my music consistently while also participating in the algorithm game. I will say, I think authenticity is always a priority no matter what you’re creating, and that is what connects and draws in your audience.
