We were lucky to catch up with Lyn Christian recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lyn, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
After working with a few weathly clients, they stepped back and wanted to give the gift of working with me to others. So, they set up a scholarship fund from a non-profit they had built. Today this fund subsidizes up to 20 individuals a year on average. I never thought my services and talent would be rewarded in this manner – in a manner where I am edified by getting to work with people who couldn’t otherwise afford coaching, they get the coahcing, and the former client’s get thank you letters at the end of the year. We all win. What a great experience these folks have afforded us all.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
We’re in the business of Courage! As a boutique coaching/consulting company with a global reach our main services are geared to do the following:
Develop a leader to next level results but not sure where to start.
Support an entrepreneur who needs to accelerate their progress.
Guide a lost and fear-filled individual seeking to recalibrate or reinvent their career.
Kick-start your business when you can’t find the time or energy to do so.
Shine a light on what to do when overwhelmed with personal challenges, situation, and issues.
We do this with one-to-one coaching, online courses, and intense bootcamps.
I started my business when I discovered the world of personal coaching by hiring coach. From the minute I had my first session, I wanted the work-life equalibrium, the personal development, and the sense of supporting others that this person posssed. So I went to school, got certified and worked my way into a full-time business. I’m on purpose when I enliven and enlgarge your vision of who you are and what you can achieve with who you are.
The greatest joy is walking my own talk. This feels like integrity and alignment in action. It is also a way to live and work on purpose. I had always wanted to earn a living and live my life in a way that inspired me. Now I do that and assist other’s to do something very similar.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The thing I had to unlearn the most was to stop assuming the a person’s potential reflected their reality. I, like some others, see a person’s potential. I can see qualities and strengths in people they may never have acknowledged before. The backstory is that when you play a role of supporting people to grow and transform, this can bite you in the butt if you ignore reality.
I had a client who claimed she was ready to set her creative prowess free. She hired me to suppor that effort. This client did have crazy creative genius. The problem is, she had more potential than will. In other words, as soon as we started giving her challenges to move beyond her past peformance and open up new networks and opportunities, she faltered. Instead of picking up the pace she turned on me and wanted me to be the reason she didn’t reach her goals.
This was the last time I banked on potential. What I see my client’s giving and doing on a week-to-week basis will always speak volumes over what their potential and possibilities reflect to my mind’s eye.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
At one point I owned two businesses. I ran and operated a coach training school – something I’m well above average in doing. And I had my regular client base at SoulSalt Inc. One day it became evident that I would be able to truly excel in one or the other not both.
It was hard to give up the school. It was challenging to my ego and identity to give up a profitable business that I was good at in order to become even better and more profitable at one business focus.
Just because you’re good at something and you like it, that doesn’t mean you should give your energy and time to it.
