We recently connected with Lydia Wilson and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Lydia thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
Yes, I do. I started a Youtube channel way back in 2012 and I let it go because I didn’t think I had what it took to be a Youtuber. I thought I needed better skills, better equipment etc when all I needed was more confidence and to not be afraid of making a mistake on camera. I thought I had to be a makeup expert right away and I stopped recording until I thought it was “perfect”. I now see how much time I wasted and how much potential growth I could have had if I’d stuck with it.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Lydia Marie, age 47, beauty blogger and Youtuber. My creative work centers around beauty and skincare tips and tutorials for women over 40. I started my Youtube channel and blog shortly after my 45th birthday and I was motivated to do so because as much as I love makeup and all things beauty, the makeup and beauty world doesn’t show love to those of us 40 and over. All of the products and makeup tutorials were marketed towards 20 and 30 somethings unless it was about anti-aging. When I did see makeup tips for women of a certain age it was all about what we SHOULDN’T do at this age. My inspiration is drawn from the glamorous, seasoned women I grew up around who didn’t let a societal norm stop them from being fabulous.
When new followers discover my work, my hope is to inspire them to see their beauty for where they are now. Embrace the journey and love it and yourself at every stage of life.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Your core audience matters more than the numbers do. For years, I was hung up on follower count, especially on my Youtube Channel. I wanted to be big right away, and when it didn’t happen that way, I got discouraged and stopped posting. Someone who watched my videos reached out to me and asked me for advice on a beauty tip, then told me they learned so much from me and wondered when I would drop another video. I thought no one was watching or that my work wasn’t up to par because they number count didn’t move. All the while, I was building a core audience that trusted me and that is what I’ve learned is the most important thing over the years.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
When a reader tells me something I wrote or recommended helped them. Knowing my audience trusts me and look to me for inspiration, the latest trends and knowing I’ll give my honest thought on a review means the most to me.
