Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lydia Clarkin. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Lydia, thanks for joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
My mission is to create honest art that allows its listener to feel emotion and question the deep topics of eternity and faith. During the pandemic, I was looking for music that spoke deeper to the challenges of life and also had a unique indie sound. I was stuck at home for months at time, separated from friends and family, and constantly being bombarded with band news. During that time the mainstream love songs were hard to connect with, so I decided to try creating music.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a multidisciplinary artist from Rhode Island. I merge music and film to tell stories. LYNDIA has a dreamy sound with introspective, faith-based lyrics. My debut EP/short film is called When This Is Over. The lyrics tell the story of Spring to Fall 2020 while the animation tells a parallel story about friendship in an alien invasion. The project wrestles with faith, doubt, anxiety, hope, anger, and everything in between. I think the thing that makes my music unique is the intent to merge music and film to tell a greater story. I want to immerse the audience in the deeper meaning of the songs. You can watch the full project here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8LNVDxph0As
The project that I am most proud of is my most recent single called “Sentimental.” You can listen here: https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/lyndia/sentimental I wrote this song in 2022 just thinking about close friends and family members who moved away. Over the years, it’s also helped me to process the loss of my grandparents. For the initial production I spent a weekend on Cape Cod to help shape the sound. I grew up going to the Cape to visit family and wanted to pull from my childhood memories. I chose to use the sound of a grandfather clock ticking, synthesizer that represented the feel of waves crashing on the beach, and a piano to reference my grandmother’s piano. After my little retreat, I spent three months producing the song at home, and then added the finishing touches at Deadpop Studio in Providence, RI with some of my friends. I hope the song will allow people to reminisce about the past. On the flip side I also hope it will encourage people to be present because we’re creating lifelong memories right now. This February, I got the opportunity to record an acoustic version of “Sentimental” with my sisters. It was special because a song that was written about people growing apart brought us back together.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of being an artist is the initial creating. I love playing around with different chord progressions, freestyling lyrics, and dreaming up stories to share. I’ve learned to fall in love with the process and how it’s an opportunity for me to grow both artistically and spiritually.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
The Band Guide Youtube channel has been super helpful for learning to use GarageBand to mix and master. I also joined a Patreon by Holy Ghost Records and it’s been nice to connect with other indie artists who share the same faith in Jesus Christ.
