Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lydea Strickland. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lydea, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
I hope I am building the legacy of a strong writer/poet and performer. I hope my writing is able to touch people and let them know they are not alone. I hope my poetry inspires people and makes them think. I hope people will say that I’ve always done my best in everything that I do. I think people will say I really cared about people and just human existence. I actually hope I am remembered for caring about people and wanting to make a difference.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a writer/ spoken word artist by night a general manager during the day. I got into writing at a very young age. I didn’t actually get into performing my poetry during open mics until I got into my adult years. It was after I wrote my book “pain into poetry”. I started doing open mics to promote book sales and I fell in love with them. It was nice having people relate. Shout out to “New Peace Mondays”. One of my favorite poetry nights the first Monday of every month.
What I believe sets my poetry apart from others is my style in general. I tell stories in my own way. People relate and can understand them. I’ve had people come to after shows in tears telling my poetry touched them. That is what makes me most proud of my poetry. When people can relate to it or it helps them overcome something they’re going through. A lot of my poetry comes from my real life experiences. I’m able to take that hurt and make it into something relatable to people. That’s what I’d want my followers to know. All my poetry is based on things I’ve been through or someone I love went through. They’re based on true stories.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The goal or mission to me is for my messages to reach as many people as possible. And to possibly touch and inspire as many people as possible.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is seeing your thoughts become tangible or reality. I like seeing what I create from just a thought or idea.
