We caught up with the brilliant and insightful L’wren a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
L’wren, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
As a kid, maybe around 8 or 9 years old, I had an older cousin who made music. He gave me his cd that had two songs on it and I listened to that cd EVERY DAY and wanted to be just like him. I would write lyrics on any piece of paper that I could find and mimic him with his style. As I became older, I kind of got away from making music and decided to try managing an artist. In 2012/2013, my freshman year of college, I had a friend who felt was really talented and needed to be heard, so I did what I do best and networked with a lot of people. I got him shoes booked and got him onto our campus radio station. I later dropped out of college and moved to Stockbridge, Ga, which is where I met the person who would get me back into writing music. Around 2014, I started hanging out with a guy named Nam Rettel, who was this AMAZING lyricist. He inspired me to get back into music by continuously practicing with me. It was to the point where every night after work, we would sit in my car and write music for HOURS. That moment right there, sitting in that car, writing and recording into my phone, formed who I am today and the reason I love music.
L’wren, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Late 2018 was my first taste of being in the industry. That’s when I released my first album into the world and started building my team. In the beginning we went by Visionaire Records, but we later found out that the label name was already taken, so now we’re in a bit of a rebranding. I take this rebranding as a chance to take a step back and take a breather so that we can refocus and learn ourselves more! We’ve built such a strong core fan base that I feel as if we can rebrand to anything it would still feel like we’re “fan”mily, which is really important to me. I always try my best to connect with my fans on a personal level, I never want them to feel like a fan, but rather like a close friend that they can talk to.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Having a fan tell you that your music or art connected to in a higher level than just the surface is BEYOND rewarding. I’ve had so many people come to me and tell me how the music is either really relatable to them or it helped them get through a rough spot, which is what has always be a passion of mine. To help people.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Be kind! Be patient! Be flexible! Be kind because the creator put their heart and time into in the art!
Be patient because rushing the art will make it come out unsatisfactory..
Be flexible by letting the artist express them selves and not judging them off what you wouldn’t normally do.
