We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Luz Estrella Colon a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Luz Estrella, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you tell us a bit about who your hero is and the influence they’ve had on you?
My hero is my husband and amazing father of our four children, Willie Colon. Despite some initial hesitancy about the career change, he never left my side. He shows me every day that he is working hard to provide for the family. Whether something needs to be fixed or renovated in the house or the children need some time at the park to run around, he continues to be an inspiration on how I approach my work. I’ve always been a hard worker, but he shows me every day that you keep working hard even on the days you may not want to work. I always want to keep that same level of commitment. So if something needs to get done, I’m your gal!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
The work that I do is a constant reminder to myself that I am blessed! My father and I had dinner, where he told me I should pursue a career in real estate. After discussing with my husband and my children, I decided to give it my all. I am blessed to help families find the home for the next chapter of their lives. Each home we visit has potential to inspire my clients and improve their quality of living. In return, many of my clients end up becoming long-term friends. It has also allowed me to work more closely with my husband, who has been my knight in shining armor. We aim to do the Lord’s work and be a force for good in this world. I specialize and am specially licensed in relocation, luxury, and new homes specialist. I am currently working on getting a certification on Seniors Real Estate Specialist.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I always try to be as genuine as possible. I love working with new people because it gives an opportunity to learn. So often in this business, I find myself meeting people I’ve never met before, and it can be a challenge. Imagine trying to help someone you just met find the right home that matches their wants and needs while staying in budget. There are companies who have entire teams dedicated to finding themselves the right space. I must do it with support from my family and team for a stranger within a few months typically. The reason why I feel it works is because I want to foster a genuine partnership with whoever I am working with. I feel like that energy is normally reciprocated and allows us to work together as a result. I listen to make sure I get the cues and the non-spoken reactions as well. Whether it takes 1 month to 3 years I want to be there to help them.
Any advice for managing a team?
There isn’t a one-size-fits-all type of solution to this question, but that is also where you can develop as a leader most. You must be willing to learn from your mistakes. Some people will make the same mistake repeatedly. They might say that they learned their lessons, but often, actions speak louder than words. So, if you make a mistake working with your team, show them that you are willing to correct it. Flexibility is another key aspect of maintaining high morale. You should understand where each person is and figure out ways to elevate them. Listening to what your team needs, as a whole and as individuals, and making sure they are well-equipped and prepared to grow can be critical to their development and their morale. We all have struggles in our journeys. Be empathetic to what each person may be dealing with and help them overcome in a way that brings out the best in each of them. If you feel you aren’t ready for a team, know that it is okay to reset and do what is best. Communicate and try to learn as much as you can so that you can eventually reach that goal if that is what you want. If not, still keep learning because learning from others and doing what the leaders do has helped me realize and figure out who I want to be. I am grateful to my friends, partners, and leaders that pour into me to be better. So KEEP PUSHING, KEEP TRYING, and BE LIGHT!
