We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Luz Espinoza a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Luz, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
One of my most meaningful projects I’ve worked on was a Photopolymer gravure print. This project was inspired by my love for collage. I gathered a plethora of pictures of eyes. Some are from my colleagues, family, friends, and several animals. It was really fun to get everyone to participate and to be able to create a piece from a group effort into a really fun and engaging project.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I studied Visual Arts at Clemson University and graduated in 2020. My emphasis area was printmaking, although I love drawing and sculpture as well. I think something that sets me apart is the style of work that I have created, which typically involves my love for science, music, and the macabre. Something that I’m most proud of outside of the traditional art world is my passion for crafting jewelry. It was a hobby I picked up the year after I graduated and I have been steady working on this craft for 3 years, and am lucky enough to vend my work as well as my prints.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I think something that an average person can do to support local artists and the surrounding communities is to get involved. Theres plenty of art spaces like fairs, classes, exhibitions that so many folks don’t participate in, usually because they don’t know its there. Giving different styles of art a chance is also extremely important, even if it’s not someone’s favorite, it doesn’t make it any less worthy of looking at and enjoying.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I think resources that I wish I had taken advantage of faster would’ve been online ones, such as digital magazines, using more social media, getting out and vending was a great way for me to build up my social circle as well as my viewership online. I never knew there were so many exhibitions that were available to me until I found them myself, especially through social media.
