We were lucky to catch up with Luna Medina-Wolf recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Luna thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
In my story, I want to share how lucky I am for the several occasions kind people helped me along my journey. I grew up in Israel in a home fraught with conflict. My father was verbally abusive toward my mother. When I was 16 years old, I could no longer bear the environment at home and after a physical altercation with my father, I ended up leaving home. There are several women along my journey that helped me survive and persevere, despite the challenges I faced. I had a social worker to support me and encourage me along the way. She helped me with the emancipation process within the legal system. She was able to see my true self and helped protect me from my narcissistic father. This is where my passion to become a therapist developed. Another woman to mention is Sarah, a teacher at my school who opened her arms to host me and assist me enroll in the foster care system in a kibbutz in Israel. Aliza, a woman in the kibbutz, took me under her wing and treated me like her own daughter. She was there for me during the defining moments of my older teen and young adult years. She was going through her own challenger in life, but it did not stop her from being there for me at every step of the way. She is a kind woman that I still call mom today. If it wasn’t for her kindness and her love, I would have not be the woman I am today. I always knew I wanted to help people, but the kindness of the women along my journey directed me to this profession of helping others.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Luna Medina-Wolf. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and a Master Certified Addiction Professional. I am proud to be the business owner of Helping Moon Counseling. My husband an I decided to expand my solo practice to group so we can help more people in the community. It is important for us to make sure there is access for mental health care in the community. In our group practice we provide individual, couples, family and group counseling. We have a diverse team of master level clinicians with a variety of specialties to be able to serve the needs of the community. We accept all major insurance policies and can offer low to no cost services for those who cannot afford services. We offer free support groups for teens, for women over 55, for grief and loss and more. We work with all ages. I am proud to say we give back to the community through our services, especially in our current reality, it is important to have accessibility for mental health services. To know that as a community, we are here for each other and no one is alone.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
My business partner is also my life partner, and it is a beautiful story of two people who complete each other. We met in the United States through friends. We both grew up in Israel and went to the same high-school, but never met. We met years later, here in the U.S. The combination between my clinical expertise and experience and his business mind we developed together a thriving practice with an absolute commitment to help the community and continue giving back. He always pushes me to do whatever it takes to support our therapists on the team so we can help the community together. We push each other to take risks to grow the business in an attempt to meet the community’s growing needs. We work hard to support our team to ensure we provide a high quality service and support.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Helping Moon Counseling has always been committed to serve the community in the best way possible. I believe we have a good name in the community because of the high level of customer care and service we offer. Even when I had a solo practice, I made an effort to get back to every person who ever called. As the practice grew, I made sure to hire the appropriate help to be able to continue providing support to the community. We make sure to provide responses in a timely manner to anyone who calls us. We make sure to provide referrals if we are not able to accommodate someone who calls. We try to update our referral network as often as possible to make sure we can link people who call to available services. It is not always easy to make the call to find a therapist. At Helping Moon Counseling, we want to make sure anyone who calls has a positive experience. Pamela, our office manager, is a licensed clinician herself, which makes the screening process easier and more clinically based.
