We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Luna Day a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Luna thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
When it came to songwriting it was pretty much a hands-on approach at writing versus for various popular songs. I wrote my first cover song in fifth grade that was my own rendition of ‘I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing’ by Aerosmith and have been writing since. I later switched to rap and hip-hop around my freshman year of high school back in 2011 and would practice with friends and close family members who also enjoyed the hobby. Eventually writing my own original songs and projects while learning how to record myself and I’m still in the process of learning and gaining experience an audio production.
I learned the importance of mentorship at a young age. This would help to sharpen my skills as a songwriter and also as a photographer when I began at the beginning of 2020. YouTube has always been one of my favorite resources but it couldn’t beat learning from someone who had over a decade of knowledge and helpful tips while starting my journey. Patience is essential when it comes to bringing your creation into fruition and courage is needed to gain experience and gain an understanding of what kind of life you are working towards. I think one of the main obstacles that stood in my way was financial hardship as a young artist who wanted to buy the correct licenses and go to professional studios to record. I would either not have enough money to put behind my ideas and music or I would spend it on what I thought would be useful but would end up becoming a dead end. I was able to maneuver around this by meeting local producers and engineers who provided high-quality sounds and a vast network with manageable rates & really staying frugal until I knew for sure that I would be proud to put my name on a song or project. For now, I would recommend meeting as many like-minded individuals as possible, create a budget for each part of the process so you know exactly how much you are spending, and get straight to work when you have an idea to share.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I first came up with Luna Day when I rearranged my mother’s maiden name, DeLuna, and really looked at the duality that exists in the world. This wasn’t the first name that I experiment with as an artist, however, I knew it would be the one that would be more relatable to those who are also of Latin descent while emphasizing my admiration of the moon & the universe.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
We did not have this when I was younger but the resources and community that Creator’s Club provides has been monumental. Creator’s Club is an app that was created by a fellow Toledo creative that I have the pleasure of working with and it is THE space that is meant to be a one-stop shop for artists. We are currently growing with over 1500 members who are always looking to network, collaborate, and provide helpful information to other artists.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I want to become someone who can provide direction end guidance to new creative minds and continue to be involved in the local and national music scene.
