We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lulu Nina a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lulu, appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I was actually born in a musical family. My mom is a classical pianist and my brother and sister sing and play the piano. I grew up singing and dancing as well. I realized that we have the common love for music when we came here to the United States and we started to perform for different people and events. My mom taught piano and opened up a music studio in Walnut, CA. We then expanded and added a dance floor area, which turned out to grow the Studio! We are able to prepare our talent for shows and events. We love the stage and seeing our own students that we develop kill it on the stage! We collaborate with the City of Walnut, other non profit organizations, and private events. We try to place our talent in all of these events. We have been collaborating with so many amazing groups/ partners such as Miss Philippines USA, Asian Fashion Week, the Lakers, the Clippers, NASCAR, The Rams, and so many more. We are so proud of how much experience we are able to share with our students and talent.!
Lulu, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started performing when I was 2 years old and entered many contests and had training for singing and dancing since I was young. I won a national championships when I was young and had the opportunity to be on some amazing stages performing with Filipino icons when I was growing up in the Philippines. I coach part time on weekends now, and nights in my mom’s studio. I have also choreographed many events as a dancer/coach including big productions and pageants. There is always so much to learn and I learn from every show and every person I meet. I also direct shows/production from time to time, and have started directing music videos and commercials for businesses. I love to also direct fashion shows and love the thrill of the events. It is extremely tiring but so super exciting!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I love seeing stars shine and seeing successful shows. I love it when plans come into fruition and developing the talent along the way.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
As I see my kids thrive to pursue their own sports and careers, it inspires me to be role model for them for hard work and consistency. My goal is to help children and talent have a platform to be seen and heard, while developing and giving them the opportunity to shine on stage! My own family who is full of musical talent starting with my mom, the matriarch of our studio, my sister, Mia Mahal, who is a singer and songwriter and my daughter Teri, a singer, and my son who wants to pursue his career in soccer are my inspiration and my goals are always to support them! The children of my studio, and my talent is what inspires me as well! To always inspire and develop is what I want to leave behind as my legacy!
