Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lulu Baker. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Lulu, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I have always had a passion for beautifying through hair and makeup but I was getting really bored with the norm. I had no idea how to go on but I knew that just doing hair commercially was not going to make me happy. I met my friend Taniiah (@theyungtea) in 2022 and she would post all of the cool things she was doing with hair. She had fashion shows and photo shoots going on and eventually I decided to try my hand with it. I did some long multicolored braids on a mannequin and wrapped the braids into a heart. When I posted photos on instagram of my first editorial hairstyle in 2023, she saw and she immediately invited me to do a hairshow with her and welcomed me to work with her on other shoots and shows. I’m eternally grateful for her impact and influence to my work and may she rest in power.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into doing hair as a child because eventually my mom got tired of doing mine! I will never forget getting ready for church with my mom the last time she flat ironed my hair and she bumped my ends too tight for my liking. I was so upset and I was trying to pull the ends straight the whole way to church. She told me that morning “if this is how you’re going to act you can do your own hair!” I can laugh about it now but in the moment I was soooo mad that I looked like Lord Farquad in my cute little outfit. From there, there was a lot of trial and error with hair that taught me a lot and I eventually started to do other peoples hair from what I learned with my own. I knew I had to find my own lane with hair and makeup instead of doing everything like every stylist I look up to. I went to school and gathered up a bunch of information to realize I can do literally everything. I don’t have to specialize in casual or formal styling because I can do both in each style. I don’t mind for my clients to come to me with a picture of a style on their phone for me to execute, however, if I’m allowed creative freedom I know my clients can trust me to come up with an original style that no one has seen before. Not even myself.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My main goal in my creative journey is to show just how versatile beauty really is. I feel like we are all aware of a standard or a trend but I feel not all of us are aware of just how subjective everything in life is. We don’t have to follow a norm or a standard to be beautiful or be a model or to be the center of an artistic project.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Sometimes I just come up with an editorial concept off the top of my head and I’ll execute based on how I feel with no idea how it’ll be received or if anyone will even like it. It feels so rewarding to post my art and have people from places I’ve never been before reposting and letting me know that my art moved them. Even to have to people in my community let me know that they see me and they’re moved!
