We recently connected with Lul Rocky and have shared our conversation below.
Lul, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I got into music at a young age. My uncle was a rapper and was part of a group in the late 2000s, so naturally me and my brother got more into music. I was more of a performer so when my uncle only taught my brother how to rap, I wasn’t tripping because that wasn’t my style anyways. From that alone I always knew how to rap, but when I got to high school I started reading poetry and shit and that taught me word play. I started making poems that sounded like raps it just had no beat, but I had no interest in rapping because I told myself “ I don’t wanna be another soundcloud rapper. ” It wasn’t til more people heard my work and people started forcing me in the studio. That’s really what got me into doing music and I just been learning the process along the way. Its been two years now since I dropped my first project as an independent artist.
Lul, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Well like I said I got into music because everybody around me was just pushing for it but really I had to find out what it meant for me. Writing is second nature to me, and most genres are the most basic form of music. They have one goal and one goal only, rhyme the last words of each sentences. That’s easy. Anybody can do that. My lil cousin be doing that. But that’s why its a difference between Dr. Suess and Shakespeare. Both are notable artist in their craft but you can never compare their work. I aint a rapper, I aint a singer, I’m really not even a musician. I’m a hood poet fr. I’m an artist. Painting a picture by any means. Whether its through my music, my movies, tv shows, or anything else I just so happen to curate or conjure. Bringing real life experiences from real life people to the streets for the people by the people. Some people say I be cappin in my raps. Every rapper cap. Except me. Cuz I aint no rapper. I be telling people stories. I got people I do stuff with or people I’m in the trenches with where rapping or being in the light aint they style but they like how I tell my story so they let me tell theirs. To me that’s the realest shit ever.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I feel like they should find a way to pay us better or support us more because believe it or not, “friends and family” don’t. It’s so much pressure on artist to always look like we rich or balling or making money. I will be the first artist to admit I’m broke asf right now. And I have touched A LOT of money in the past two years. It cost to chase a dream. Especially when you chasing it by yourself. And I choose to be independent because I like have the say so in what I do but it’s hard funding yourself and being a one or two man team.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Mannnnnnn….. this one time back in 2021, Me and my old friend planned a last minute trip so I could perform at this networking event in Rancho Cucamonga. Now it was already last minute so we did everything on the fly. My license was expired at the time so they wouldn’t let me get a rental and when I tried to send my homie the money they wouldn’t accept it because it was debit and we under 25 some goofy rule like that. So we ubers, buses, trains, and Shoelace Express everywhere. We finally get to our hotel room it looks nothing like how it did when we looked on the website. Always check them reviews man. Anyways so we get into it with the hotel people because it looked like a resort onna outside but that room looked like a roach motel and a crime scene. Got blood and shit onna mattress. At this point, its like 1-2 in the morning and I got to perform in 12 hours. So we looking around for a hotel to sleep in but everywhere booked up and its 2 am so we end up falling asleep in a La Quinta lobby for 4-5 hours before having to take a bus, train and uber ALLLLLL the way to Rancho Cucamonga. Its much more to that story but after that experience I can deal with any situation. Can’t get wilder than that right?
