We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Luke Thornton. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Luke below.
Luke, appreciate you joining us today. It’s easy to look at a business or industry as an outsider and assume it’s super profitable – but we’ve seen over and over again in our conversation with folks that most industries have factors that make profitability a challenge. What’s biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
General cost of living and basic greed. It concerns me that pursuing music will only be available to those with great means. It’s hard if not impossible to make money off of the music itself, touring and making sufficient living off of it is more difficult without sacrificing quality of life. I know a lot of talented people would be able to go a lot farther with their music if money was less of a concern. It’s a loss to everyone if we make it impossible for good talent to develop and make a fair living.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Luke Thornton and I sing and play guitar in an indie rock group called Secret Towns based out of Atlanta, GA. We play shows around Atlanta, GA and last year we released our debut album called “Nightlights”. It’s a cool combo of indie rock, psychedelic dream pop. For me the purpose of it was to crystallize people and places during certain times of my life in a way I hope people can connect to.
The fact this is my first band and I’ve been able to make it last as long as I have (especially through a pandemic) is something I’m proud, not to mention the music itself I’ve been able to make with some great musicians and friends. It’s really been a passion project for me, and I think where we are about to go has me more excited.
We’re releasing a new single called “Someday” on August 12th with some cool experiments and about to start recording our 2nd album which will be related a lot to my experiences and feelings towards my home of Atlanta.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I think being a reflection of the things I love and am inspired by in music. I love to be able to explore something that has personal and creative impact on me and find a way to include it in my own way in my music.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Having a body of work and a series of albums that I think I could be proud of for the rest of my life. I think music is unique in being able to crystallize life and experiences. For me as time moves on, being able to do that for the things changed for me personally and how I see the world, is a way to keep it alive and to be able to grow from it at the same time.
