We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Luke Simmons. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Luke below.
Hi Luke, thanks for joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I lived in a musical family who were a constant influence on me. I had a safe space at home and with friends to be terrible, and naturally, I got better over time. And while there were a few moments throughout my time in school and college that were discouraging because these moments came from people who I respected, it wasn’t debilitating. I endured, and fell back on what I knew, and it carries me to this day. Though, I will always wish I practiced more, but what musician doesn’t feel that way?

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name’s Luke, and I’m just a guy who absolutely loves music, and have loved it my entire life. My parents put a bunch of instruments in my room one Christmas, and I just went to town on ’em. They gave me a mic and I’d yell into it until it sounded alright. Same thing with the piano, guitar, drums, and so on, I tried them all, and that love has never left.
And when I moved out on my own, I’ve been dedicated to honing my skills and sharing the culmination of all that musical love to others. And I’m so glad I’ve made friends with some insanely talented people who have been more than happy to create with me. I’m so proud of what I’ve been able to make, every project being so fulfilling from someone else’s band or composition, or my own band, Luke Simmons & the Lovestruck. At this point, I’m just having so much fun seeing how far I can take this thing. How many people can I get to hear these songs, and how many shows can I play? It’s been a wild ride, and I have no intention of getting off any time soon.
Luke Simmons & the Lovestruck is here to stay!

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the journey itself is so rewarding if you are willing and able to adapt and change with it. At the start, I wanted to start on my projects and ideas so badly, to get people involved and inspired, but time has shown me that life needed to inspire me first once I got out there on my own. And I’m thankful to my younger self for being humble. The people I have met, the stages I have got to be on, and allowing myself to be led, coached, and humbled by the limitless talent that exists out there has inspired me to an unimaginable degree. So, a word to the wise: enjoy the journey!

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I’m a millennial, so I’m a big Youtube watcher, and I’ve consumed an endless amount of content on the platform. But if I had to really limit myself, I would say that recently, anything Adam Neely has put out on his channel in regards to managing his own band, Sungazer, his intellectual thoughts on music theory, or general takes on music or the industry as a whole, I’ve really resonated with. He’s got a cool vibe about him as well as being an amazing musician. Highly recommended.
