We were lucky to catch up with Luke Ring recently and have shared our conversation below.
Luke, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Certainly, focusing on your role as the owner:
Sukavision’s mission is a deeply personal endeavor that transcends conventional filmmaking. This mission, centered around the transformative power of storytelling, seeks to influence change, foster empathy, and illuminate diverse human experiences. As the owner of Sukavision, I, Luke Ring, have infused the company with my personal experiences, beliefs, and aspirations, aligning our mission closely with the essence of who we are as a creative collective.
The roots of Sukavision’s mission are deeply embedded in my early life in Saint Joe, Michigan, where I was mentored by my father, Mark Ring. These formative years taught me about more than just the mechanics of filmmaking; they showed me the significant impact of cinema on individuals and society. This profound understanding is what Sukavision’s mission is built upon—a conviction that stories have the power to transform, challenge, and broaden perspectives.
What makes Sukavision’s mission so meaningful is its foundation in genuine relationships and shared visions. My collaboration with Sam Bredeweg, a childhood friend and ambitious producer, has been essential in shaping Sukavision into a hub for creative and purposeful storytelling. Our mission is ambitious: to initiate dialogue, question societal norms, and cultivate empathy through our cinematic endeavors.
This mission resonates with us personally because it mirrors our identities. Sukavision is more than a film company; it embodies our life’s passion and efforts. Each project we embark on is a step toward realizing our vision of cinema as a medium for enlightenment, empathy, and empowerment. Our drive stems from the belief in cinema’s ability to make a meaningful impact, change perceptions, and foster a more connected and understanding world.
Our dedication to this mission is steadfast. We recognize the responsibility that comes with crafting narratives that have the potential to reach and affect a wide audience. This awareness influences every aspect of our work, from the stories we choose to tell to our storytelling approach to the partnerships we cultivate. Sukavision is a testament to our commitment to excellence, integrity, and the pursuit of a cinema that not only entertains but also matters.
In summary, Sukavision’s mission is an authentic expression of our journey, values, and aspirations. It embodies our commitment to challenging the conventional and making a difference through the art of filmmaking. As the owner of Sukavision, I am inspired by the belief that our work can bring about change, one story at a time, and remain dedicated to this mission as we continue to create and innovate in the world of cinema.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
In a memorable moment for Sukavision, our team had the privilege of being featured in an interview on ABC 57 News in South Bend, Indiana, spotlighting the creative journey behind “American Dreamers.” Unfortunately, Race Bettich, Eleanor Conway, and Mark Ring were unable to join us, leaving myself, Luke Ring, along with Sam Bredeweg and Scott Portt, to represent our collective effort. This opportunity on a respected local news platform was not just a personal milestone but a testament to the growing influence of indie filmmaking within both the regional and broader cultural landscapes.
The experience of discussing “American Dreamers” on air was both exhilarating and nerve-wracking, allowing us to share the depth and innovation of our indie film project amidst South Bend’s burgeoning appreciation for independent cinema. This unique platform enabled us to highlight the collaborative spirit of Sukavision, emphasizing our commitment to creating thought-provoking narratives that inspire change and resonate deeply with audiences.
Focusing exclusively on “American Dreamers” during the interview provided a concentrated look at the themes of youth, independence, and the pursuit of unconventional dreams that define the film. It was a chance to underscore the local support that has been crucial to our success, showcasing how stories from the indie film sector, particularly those emerging from South West Michigan and its environs, are challenging conventional filmmaking norms and fostering rich cultural dialogues.
Reflecting on this significant exposure, the Sukavision team’s presence on ABC 57 News not only promoted “American Dreamers” but also celebrated the passion, creativity, and resilience that underpin our filmmaking approach. It was a moment of recognition from the community, affirming our mission to make a meaningful contribution to cinema and inspiring fellow artists and filmmakers in South Bend and beyond.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
As Luke Ring, a dedicated indie filmmaker and the driving force behind Sukavision, being a filmmaker transcends the mere act of directing films; it embodies the profound journey of storytelling, innovation, and the relentless pursuit of bringing visions to life on screen. Filmmaking, to me, means harnessing the power of visual narratives to evoke emotions, provoke thought, and inspire change, all while navigating the intricate dance of creativity, technology, and collaboration that defines the indie film industry.
7 Flames Till Death – The Pit and the Pendulum and American Dreamers stand as pillars of Sukavision’s commitment to cinematic excellence and innovative storytelling. 7 Flames Till Death is a suspense-filled adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s classic tale, reimagined through a modern lens. This project highlights my passion for psychological thrillers, narrative depth, and the exploration of human resilience and fear. It showcases Sukavision’s ability to weave complex narratives with atmospheric tension, bringing a fresh perspective to timeless stories.
American Dreamers, on the other hand, delves into the coming-of-age genre, exploring themes of youth, independence, and the pursuit of unconventional paths. Written from a place of introspection and societal observation, this film reflects my interest in character-driven stories and the exploration of the American dream. It exemplifies Sukavision’s dedication to producing content that resonates with contemporary audiences, offering insights into the challenges and aspirations of the younger generation.
In essence, being a filmmaker is about being a storyteller, a visionary, and a craftsman, adept at translating complex human experiences into compelling visual tales. With projects like 7 Flames Till Death – The Pit and the Pendulum and American Dreamers, I aim to push the boundaries of indie cinema, creating films that not only entertain but also question, reflect, and connect with audiences on a profound level.
