Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Luke & Hannah Sunderland. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Luke & Hannah, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
When we first began to brainstorm ideas for the name of our company, we knew we wanted it to be both easy to remember and meaningful. Out of all the names we wrote down, Harmony Home stood out to us most for two reasons:
1. It’s easy to remember, thanks to alliteration.
2. There’s a double meaning behind the name.
The first meaning is the musical definition of the word harmony. By providing in-home music lessons, we are bringing musical harmony to your home.
The second meaning reflects the other definition of the word harmony, meaning peace. By providing music lessons in the comfort of people’s homes, we’re preventing people from getting stressed out in traffic if they were to take lessons at a traditional studio. Harmony Home brings people peace, knowing that they don’t have to rush off to music lessons because the instructor comes to them in the comfort of their home.
Because of this double meaning behind our name, we truly are bringing Harmony to your Home.
Luke & Hannah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Together, we (Luke and Hannah Sunderland) founded Harmony Home. Here’s a little info about each of our backgrounds!
Luke is a professional guitarist, earning a Bachelor’s in Commercial Guitar and a Master’s of Music both from Belmont University. Some of Luke’s most notable performances have been with Kenzie Wheeler at the Grand Ole Opry, a private event at the Country Music Hall of Fame, and Live in Studio C on Nashville Public Radio.
Hannah is an educator who has earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s in Education. She has taught all around the world, from Southeast Asia to Southeast Nashville. She loves showing her creativity through music, art, baking, and restoring furniture.
After getting married, we wanted to start something together that we were both passionate and knowledgable about, but we also wanted to find a way to steward our gifts well and serve the community around us. Luke had already been a private guitar instructor for several years and has found so much joy and fulfillment in being able to bring the joy of music to others. Hannah is a teacher, and has a love for music as well. This got the wheels turning, leading us to form Harmony Home. We’ve now hired other quality instructors to service the greater Nashville area, providing in-home lessons for an array of instruments such as piano, voice, violin, drums, and more!
Harmony Home’s mission is to provide exceptional in-home music lessons, while demonstrating the love of Christ through our daily interactions with our students and their families.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
There are three books that really helped us gain clarity on how to manage and scale our business.
The first is the E-Myth by Michael Gerber. This really made us conscious of building systems for our company so that we can eventually scale. The main idea the book emphasizes is to make sure you work on your business rather than work in your business.
The second book I would recommend is Profit First by Mike Michalowicz. This really helped us structure our finances in order to make the most out of every dollar. This was crucial for us as we started with essentially a zero dollar marketing budget.
The third book that really helped us out is Traction by Gabriel Weinberg. This book offers marketing strategies that are applicable to any business no matter the stage that they’re in.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
As a private guitar instructor, I (Luke) started off with only a handful of students, which essentially was a side hustle. That eventually grew into a full time job. After several years of teaching guitar full-time, I began to think about how I could help other musicians in Nashville grow their student roster so that they could eventually become full time instructors, or at the very least become full-time musicians with teaching being part of their income. Harmony Home’s main goal isn’t just to serve our students by providing them with lessons, but it’s also to serve our instructors by providing them with an opportunity to teach and bring the joy of music to others.
