We were lucky to catch up with Luke Ervin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Luke, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you have a hero? What have you learned from them?
Who is your hero and why? When I was a young advisor, I had an interesting mentor, Nobel Prize-winning economist Harry Markowitz. It started with Harry pitching me to speak at my company’s events, but once he saw my genuine interest in him and his work, we ended up talking and meeting frequently. warding to help guide them on things like interviewing skills, networking, & negotiation.
What lessons have you learned from them and how have they influenced your journey?
He taught me to challenge the status quo and to think differently. I have also had the opportunity to be a mentor on a few occasions by volunteering to mentor young men getting out of the military and going into corporate America. That was very rewarding.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I packed up a U-Haul and drove across the country to San Diego after I graduated from North Carolina. I didn’t have a job lined up and did not know anyone in the area – I simply had always wanted to live in San Diego and learn how to surf…so I went for it! The first half of my career was spent at Smith Barney (now Morgan Stanley) where I worked mainly with Corporate Executives who were seeking guidance on their corporate stock plans (options, restricted stock, etc.). Then the last nearly ten years I have been at UBS, where the majority of my time is spent working with Entrepreneurs and Business Owners, helping them with pre-liquidity planning as they look toward selling their business in the near future. Having been through four significant economic downturns and subsequent bear markets (The tech bubble, Global Financial Crisis, the pandemic, and this inflation-led bear market), I have found that those tough times are also where I find the most satisfaction in my career. In those times when everybody is worried, scared, and panicked; being able to visibly see the anxiety clients have disappear by lending some perspective and drawing their attention to the Financial Plan we have created for them. So, in a sense, the difficult times are when I feel like I genuinely help people the most.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I have always used the approach of trying to be relatable and leading by example. I believe when my team and clients see me getting my hands dirty with a smile on my face, they understand that I’m willing to do what needs to be done for them. No ego here…just a passion for what I do.

Have you ever had to pivot?
Just a few months ago, I decided to change the name of my team. Mission Family & Business Group was formally known as Mission Wealth Management. Over the past few years, I’ve focused on working with business owners and their families to help them plan for the business and beyond. The word “Mission” is special to me. It represents the area of town I live in, Mission Hills. I also like the connotation of the word Mission. It’s strong and shows that we advise with purpose.
The team wanted a name that spoke more to our focus and the clients we serve. Updating it to Mission Family & Business Group explains what we do and who we represent better. The team loves the new name.
