We recently connected with Luke DePron and have shared our conversation below.
Luke , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you recount a time when the advice you provided to a client was really spot on? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
Most of the men I work with want to lose weight, have more energy, and confidence. My best advice for men that fit that description is to be patient.
Far to many men try to speed up the process of fat-loss by eating overly restrictive diets and performing overly intense workout programs.
These men do well for a few weeks, and even see some results. But eventually life gets busy, their business or job picks up, a vacation arrives, and eventually they crash and burn.
These are the guys who constantly start and stop their health and fitness habits. When life calms down they’re all in, and they again try to blitz their way to their physique, fitness, and health goals…until of course they can’t!
A great example of this is a client who for privacy sake I’ll call Paul.
When Paul reached out to me, he had multiple weight-loss attempts under his belt. He was a driven guy, successful business owner, competent in other areas of his life, but constantly struggling with his weight. He self described as an all-in, all-out kinda guy. He would hop on “fitness challenges” and often crush it for 30 days, but then when business picked up he wouldn’t workout for a month.
His diet followed a similar path. He would load up on “healthy” foods, swear off everything else, try whatever latest diet trend to lose a few pounds. But eventually life would happen, drinks with clients would lead to a binge, and he would be right back to his old ways. This cycle happened over and over again.
Periods of dedicated focus to expedite your physique, health, and fitness results is great. But if your approach isn’t built on a foundation of sustainability it’s all for nothing. What you do today, you need to think of doing a year from now.
The good new is if you take a systematic approach you can transform your physique working out just three to four times per week while focusing on eating foods you truly enjoy.
In the case of Paul when we started working together, we set his guaranteed minimum weekly standard at three workouts each week.
Rather than working out for 30 days straight, we created a simple routine and stretched 30 workouts out over the course of 2.5 months. This created the flexibility to adapt his plan when a business fire came up and prevented him from getting burned out. This approach created long term consistency which drove lasting results. Nutritionally he focused on Go To Meals which are meals he actually enjoyed and fit the framework he needed to drive fat-loss.
He ditched the All In mentality and committed to playing the long game. Now the occasionally indulgence of food, or busy work week was just a speed-bump and not a derailment. Once he did that long term results showed up too. Now he’s down 22 pounds, has kept the weight off, feels great, and approached weight loss in a way that felt almost easy in comparison to his past efforts.
I do understand the desire for fast results, we all have that, myself included. But the truth is you can’t rush your physiology. You can however optimize the process, and that’s what I help the men I work with do.
Consistency beats volume.
Luke , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
After graduating from Illinois State University with a degree in Exercise Science (the study of movement) I’ve been fortunate to work in the fitness industry in a multitude of arenas.
I’ve done everything from sport performance with college, olympic, and professional level athletes, to corrective exercise in one of San Diegos premier rehab studios, to thousands of hours of 1 on 1 personal training.
Today with the Live Great Lifestyle and my online coaching program the Lean Body Method I provide the systems, structure, and support men need to lose 20+ pounds in 90 days without giving up the foods they love, or spending all their time in the gym.
With the Lean Body Method we focus on three key phases to create transformation. Build, Fuel, & Move.
During the Build phase we develop simple and foundational strength habits to build lean muscle and sculpt an attractive physique. For the busiest of guys this can even take place at home.
In the FUEL phase we get you eating great-tasting food to fuel muscle growth and trigger fat burn. There’s absolutely no need to eat boring bland foods you hate. That’s a recipe for failure. We focus on foods you personally enjoy.
And in the MOVE phase we integrate simple lifestyle strategies and play to burn calories and stimulate fat loss without endless hours on a treadmill.
Through the synergy of those phases, clients find themselves on a path of sustainability where diet and exercise support their lives rather than taking over their lives. Taking a sustainable approach removes all the excuses to quit.
It’s important to remember anyone can hop on a crash diet or crazy workout plan and lose a few pounds. But losing the weight and keeping it off for good takes more nuance and strategy. What sets the work I do apart is that I help clients solve their fitness and weight-loss challenges at a foundational level so they keep the weight of for good. By providing clients with foundational tools, systems, strategies, and education I make this the last “fitness and diet program” they have to do.
Primarily working with businessmen and entrepreneurs who are short on time, it’s important to point out that improving your fitness and health impacts more than just your physique.
As you lose the weight and increase your fitness, your energy, stamina, sleep, and confidence all improves. The benefits of those improvements impact EVERY aspect of your life. How you show up in your relationships, and how you show up in your business and career.
I often ask perspective clients how their life would improve if they were operating at even greater capacity. Sadly until you take ownership of your health and fitness, and optimize it, you won’t.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
A big pivot I made was moving to an online business model. This was done years before Covid, and stemmed from the recognition that the in-person personal training model was incomplete and often failed to deliver long term results.
Far to often with personal training I found clients simply “checking the box” by training with me, when the reality is what you do outside the gym is as important as the workouts performed in the gym.
As an online coach, I’m able to provide systems of support and accountability around exercise, nutrition, and lifestyle factors like sleep, step-count and a host of other inputs that impact results, while also creating the space for the guys I work with to step-up and take full ownership of their actions.
It’s this taking full ownership of your actions that create deep and lasting change.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Simply put, relationships.
Building relationships is crucial to success in any business, but particularly important to a service based business.
While my business isn’t restricted to San Diego, and I’ve worked with clients across the nation, the relationships I’ve built here in San Diego are a bit part of that being possible.
Those relationships may be with past clients eager to make introductions to prospective clients. Local practitioners who are a better fit to work with a prospective client or can provide necessary adjuvant support. As well as relationships with other business owners and entrepreneurs that you can lean into for advice, support, business services, inspiration, and mentorship are all key.
