We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Luke Daniels a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Luke, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you manage your own social media?
Social media is a tricky but necessary part of my business. I am fortunate to have my wife as my business partner. She’s been instrumental in boosting our audience as well as elevating our brand. I tend to be a private person and I’m not personally on social media but I understand it’s value to my listeners and my business’s footprint. One thing we’ve learned is that posts that ask a question generate more active responses. The same can be said of posts that show me doing something/anything other than promoting my work.
Luke, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am an audiobook narrator and author. I have over 700 books recorded and have been inducted in Audible’s Narrator Hall of Fame. I strive for a naturally engaging narration style combined with dynamic characterizations. I’ve worked in many different genres. I work with major publishers as well as directly with authors. I enjoy my work and try to bring a sense of wonder and humor to my projects and brand. The business of audiobooks has been booming and shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
When my son was born he was very sick and we spent 21 months in and out of hospitals fighting for his life until he eventually passed. Every day He showed me what true resiliency looked like. While he was sick and afterward in my grief I still had to work and record books. Picking up and continuing on often seemed impossible but my mantra was and remains, if he could do it, so could I. Thanks son.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I first started in audiobooks the industry was geared towards recording in professional studios with a director and engineer. However within the first few years of establishing myself I noticed that home studios were becoming more and more prevalent due to the low overhead. I started building my own studio and developing clients that preferred that process. 10 years later and 99% of my work comes from my home studio. I think it was vital to my company’s current success that I read the tea leaves and was able to pivot.
